1984 – 1995 Faculty member in the Department of Cardio-thoracic & vascular Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.  Was Additional Professor at the time of leaving AIIMS and  joining Escorts Heart Institute.

Dr. Iyer completed his M.B.B.S, M.S. and M.Ch. (Postgraduate examination in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Post his education, he joined the cardiology department of AIIMS and was Additional Professor at AIIMS before moving to Escorts Heart Institute to set up its pediatric cardiac care division. He trained in pediatric and infant cardiac surgery under the guidance of the renowned pediatric cardiac surgeon – Dr. R.B.B.Mee - as Senior Fellow at the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne in Australia. Since his return he has endeavored to popularize the specialty of pediatric and congenital heart surgery in India. He has contributed prolifically to furthering the cause of pediatric cardiac care through a large number of research papers and studies, authoring sections in medical books on pediatric and neonatal cardiac surgery and traveling to cities across India and abroad to deliver lectures. He has been the President of Asia-Pacific Pediatric Cardiac Society and President of Pediatric Cardiac Society of India. He is a member of Specialty Board of National Diplomate Examination.

• Trained in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Royal Children Hospital, Melbourne, Australia with Dr. Roger B.B. Mee - the internationally renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, after completing basic training in cardiac surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
• Dr Iyer has performed over 8000 heart surgeries in small babies and children since 1989 when he returned to India.
• He left All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1995 as Additional Professor of Cardiac Surgery to join Escorts Heart institute and Research Centre.
• Dr Iyer was one of the first full time Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons in India. His current success rate in babies and children is over 98%.
• He has performed the first successful “double switch” operation – a very complex heart operation, in India.
• He also has the distinction of performing the first successful ‘Rapid two-stage arterial switch operation’ in India.
• He has been bestowed several national and international awards including “Distinguished Service Award” as well as “Certificate for Outstanding Contributions” by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam- President of India.
• Dr Iyer was the President - Pediatric Cardiac Society of India.
• He is also involved in training & setting up pediatric Cardiac Units in Indonesia, Bangladesh and other Asian countries. As a result many children from Bangladesh, Pakistan, parts of Africa, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan undergo surgery at Escorts Heart institute and Research Centre.
• In recognition of his contributions to pediatric cardiac surgery in Asia he was voted the Founder President of the ‘Asia Pacific Pediatric Cardiac Society’
• He is actively involved in the ‘Gift of Life’ program of the Rotary International Foundation and was awarded the ‘Paul Harris Fellow’ of the Foundation for his humanitarian contributions..
• He has over a hundred scientific publications in national and international journals and has been an invited speaker in many national and international conferences. In recognition of his academic contributions he has been selected as Member of the Steering Committee of the World Cpngress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
