Mohali: Over 75 patients attended the interactive session conducted by 'Sahaayak', a dialysis support group that comprises past and present dialysis patients, in which doctors enlightened them on various aspects associated with the life of a dialysis patient.
The meeting began with an interactive presentation on 'General issues with dialysis patients' by Dr Bela Sharma, followed by a presentation on 'Role of dietetics in dialysis' by Sonia Gandhi, a clinical nutritionist.
According to Dr Bela, "Getting dialysis treatment done is a serious responsibility and the patient has to work closely with doctors to manage his health. There are a number of potential complications which may arise, related to dialysis of the underlying kidney disease itself."
Detailing these complications, Dr Bela said, "A number of dialysis patients tend to suffer from anaemia, leaving them feeling weak and tired. Lack of erythropoietin, which is made by healthy kidneys to stimulate production of red blood cells, often causes anaemia.
In other cases, low levels of iron or vitamins in the blood, caused by diet restrictions, poor absorption of iron, or removal of iron and vitamins by dialysis can cause anaemia."
