JEAN RODRIGUES, wife of the UT Administrator, today visited Fortis Hospital to meet 17-year-old girl, Money, daughter of a poor labourer of Fatehgarh Churian in Gurdaspur. Money was suffering from a serious heart ailment and was operated free of cost by Fortis Healthcare, as part of its social responsibility.

Talking to Money, Jean Rodrigues encouraged her to resume her education once she recovered completely and be a support to her poor parents. She reassured Money that she had received treatment from some of the best medical experts in the country and, in future too, all her medical needs would be taken care of. She commended the great work being done by Fortis Healthcare for the underprivileged sections of the society.

Money had rheumatic heart disease with severe mitral valve regurgitation (leakage) and moderate pulmonary artery hypertension. Due to the leakage of the valve, she was suffering from palpitations and breathlessness even on slight exertion, which hampered her day-to-day activities.

Her rhythm was irregular due to which she developed a clot in her heart. This led to a left-sided stroke in 2005. She was first evaluated at a hospital in Amritsar and was advised surgery at the earliest. Money’s father is a poor daily–wage labourer and could not afford the surgery. Over the last three to four years, Father Roby of a Church in Fathehgarh Churian had been helping the family by approaching different schools in the area for funds.

However, the cost of surgery was much beyond these limited means. On coming to know about girl’s plight, Fortis Hospital volunteered to provide the world-class surgical treatment that Money needed, free of cost.

“Now that she is okay, my child will go back to school and lead a normal life,” hoped Saroj, with tears rolling down her cheeks.
