Money gets a surprise guest

Jean Rodrigues, wife of Punjab governor SF Rodrigues, on Saturday visited 17-year-old Money, daughter of a poor labourer from Fatehgarh Churian in Gurdaspur district, who was suffering from a serious heart ailment and was operated free of cost after her plight was highlighted by a newspaper.

Talking to Money, Rodrigues encouraged her to resume her education once she recovered completely, and be a support to her poor parents. She reassured Money that she had received treatment from some of the best medical experts in the country and all her medical needs would be taken care of in the future too. The surgery was conducted by cardiologist Dr TS Mahani.

Money had rheumatic heart disease with severe mitral valve regurgitation (leakage) and moderate pulmonary artery hypertension. Due to this, she was suffering from palpitations and breathlessness even on slight exertion, which hampered her day-to-day activities.

Money’s father being a poor labourer could not afford the surgery, the cost of which ran into lakhs of rupees. Over the last 3-4 years, Father Roby of a church in Fathehgarh Churian had been helping the family by approaching different schools in the area for funds. However, the cost of surgery was much beyond these limited means and hence Father Roby had approached a newspaper.

Money underwent mitral valve replacement wit h a titanium valve on July 30, which was successful. Money’s parents, Ashok and Saroj were extremely happy at the turn of events.

“Now that she is okay, my child will go back to school and lead a normal life,” said Saroj with tears in her eyes.
