Significant rise in rheumatic heart diseases in Valley |
| |
The rheumatic heart disease in the valley has shown a significant rise during the last 17 years of turmoil, said noted cardiac surgeon and director of Escorts Heart Institute and Research centre Dr. Yugal K Mishra.
Dr Mishra who was on a one-day trip to Srinagar, gave prescriptions to large number of patients at a hospital here.
“One of the main reasons for rheumatic heart disease is stress and tension. People in Valley are living under huge stress and pressure from these years of turmoil. So I have seen patients from this part of the country often visiting Escorts for surgeries and treatment for rheumatic heart disease,” he said.
Dr Mishra, who has operated over 7000 cardiovascular cases during his career, has also pioneered minimally invasive cardiac surgeries at Escort Heart Institute including MIDCAB (Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass) surgery, OPACB (Off Pump Coronary Artery Bypass) surgery and port access approach for mitral valve surgery and ASD closure.
Dr Mishra has the distinction of initiating the Robotic Cardiac Surgery at Escorts Heart Institute in December 2002. His other area of interest includes redo cardiac surgery and has performed more than 500 cases and over 350 robotic cardiac cases.
Robotic Cardiac Surgery, as per Dr Mishra, is a touch-free heart surgery using robots of the minimally invasive surgical technique using Robotics, which has been introduced in the cardiac surgery to avoid the complications associated with the traditional heart surgery. “Robotics Cardiac Surgery is being chosen by more patients than before in India. It is now becoming more popular,” said Dr Mishra. |
