Escorts Hospital has a dedicated nephrology department for the patients of kidney diseases. The Nephrology Department provides outpatient, inpatient and emergency services. Department is equipped to manage following types of patients-
Acute, chronic and rapidly progressive renal failure
Patients on dialysis
Transplant patients
Renal hypertension
Glomerulonephritis
Diabetic nephropathy
Nephrotic syndrome and Fluid, electrolyte and acid-base imbalance.
All types of dialysis such as peritoneal dialysis (acute PD, CAPD), haemodialysis, and continuous renal relacement therapies (CRRT) are available. It has seven state-of-art art dialysis machines with volumetric ultrafiltration control and facility of bicarbonate dialysis. There is facility of providing bedside dialytic support in critically ill patients of ICU and CCU is also available.
Maintenance haemodialysis is available for the patients of CRF (Chronic renal failure). We try to achieve international standards for the same. RO water for dialysis meets the internationally prescribed AAMI standards. More than four hundred dialysis sessions are being conducted per month. There are patients who are on dialysis for more than nine years. Emphasis is laid on making patients fit for full rehabilitation.
The facility of plasmaphresis is also available. This is an important procedure for patients of anti GBM disease, Gullain Barre syndrome etc.
Various nephrological procedures such as vascular access creation by femoral, sub-clavian and jugular catheterizatin, A-V shunt, AV fistula, vascular graft, CAPD catheter insertion, kidney biopsy are available. The Department provides facilities for management of pre and post-transplant patients.
The department is actively involved in teaching activity. DNB students of critical care and general medicine are taught the science of nephrology. Nursing training and training for dialysis technician is available. Several nurses have found suitable job in UK and other countries after receiving training and experience in the department.
