Sukhbir Badal urges Fortis to set up more hospitals and a medical college in Punjab
Mohali, September 5, 2008: Cardiac Care facilities in the region got a big boost today with the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art Cath Lab by Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal, MP and President, Shiromani Akali Dal at Fortis Hospital, Mohali. With this, the region now has technically advanced cardiac care equipment comparable to the best in the world. Also present on the occasion were Sardar Kiranbir Singh Kang, President, All India Youth Akali Dal (Badal) and Mr. H S Mattewal, Advocate General, Punjab.
Visibly impressed by the facilities at Fortis Hospital, Sardar Sukhbir Badal exhorted Fortis to set up 5-6 more hospitals in Punjab. “Healthcare is a priority area for Punjab and the State Government is more than willing to facilitate the setting up of such advanced hospitals like Fortis,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shivinder Mohan Singh, CEO and Managing Director, Fortis Healthcare Ltd. stated, “At Fortis, we continuously make fresh investments in the latest technologies. Our objective is to ensure that Fortis always remains a Centre of Excellence and the new Cath Lab is a big leap in this direction.”
While Dr. Jagmohan Varma explained the functioning of the Cath Lab to the guests in the Cardiac Unit after the ceremonial ribbon cutting, Dr. G.S.Kalra explained the Cardiac Catheterization procedure later in the auditorium. He spoke about how the Cath Lab plays a critical and powerful role in treating a cardiac patient as all the diagnostic equipment is located here and helps the surgeon ‘see’ into the heart and the surrounding blood vessels. The capabilities of the surgeon are enhanced and the surgery becomes safer for the patient if the images/data given by the Cath Lab are of superior quality.
According to Dr. T S Mahant, Executive Director - Cardiac Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mohali, “The new Siemens (Axiom-Artis Zee) Cath Lab, which has been imported from Germany, has a number of features that will benefit both the surgeon and the patient. The Resolution of the Cath Lab is very high and this will help the surgeon to conduct procedures even on obese patients with ease. Because of a very effective and efficient cooling system, it will now be possible to conduct a large number of surgeries on a continuous basis, leading to less waiting time for patients.”
Mr. Ashish Bhatia added “Apart from world-class equipment, Fortis has consistently invested in building up a multidisciplinary team of doctors, supported by high caliber nursing professionals and paramedical staff. He emphasized on the fact that FHM extended itself whole heartedly to the community and had treated any number of patients free of cost, especially in form of free surgeries and high end procedures. He enumerated the various CSR projects undertaken by FHM and the outreach OPDs and rural camps that were organized all through the year.”
