Fortis Foundation in Leh

September 07, 2010

5th  August 2010 at 02:15 a.m. hundreds of people were killed and many others went missing after heavy downpour triggered flash floods, devastating Leh in the Ladakh region. The devastation was such that it left all relief activities paralysed initially - hospitals were damaged, communication systems were hit and the effected areas were cut off from the rest of the country.

Fortis Foundation, to provide support and medical relief in Leh, approached several officials and army personnel directing relief operations in the area. This included among others, Ministry of Health, National Disaster Management Authority, Save the Children - the oldest NGO operating in Leh and Indian Red Cross Society.

Fortis Foundation contributed medicines and consumables worth Rs. 3 Lac towards those affected. Two doctors – a cardiologist and a physician - from Fortis Escort Heart Institute, volunteered to provide medical assistance on location. These doctors provided treatment to hundreds of patients in several places including the Leh main city, Tasigatsar and Himank medical camp in Chouglamsar, Khalsi, Tia, Temiz, Skurbuchand and Tigu villages. The foundation with the support of Fortis Hospital in Mohali also committed free surgeries to 5 patients from Leh.
