Chandigarh, July 8, 2004: With the onset of the monsoon in the region, there are a number of precautions and health safeguards that the citizens of the region should take. As part of its social commitment Fortis Heart and Multi-speciality Hospital, Mohali today released a number of health guidelines and tips for the general public especially pregnant woman, persons with joint pains or those who have been recently surgically operated upon, infants, the elderly, patients with a history of heart disease, asthmatics and people with breathing disorders.

Fortis Healthcare also gave advice on food and dietary habits during the monsoon as well as simple exercises a person could do at home if he is not able to go to the park for his regular exercises.

According to Dr. T. S. Mahant, MD, MS, MCh., M. N. A. M. S., Executive Director - Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery, Fortis Healthcare, "The wet season brings its burden of health problems. Patients with old surgery scars do feel a bit more tender at the scar site and sometimes fresh wounds take longer to heal. The longer healing period is attributed to increase in humidity, which prevents wounds from drying early. Dry climatic conditions do lead to earlier healing, however, it is also dependent on the immunity of the individual.

After surgery, if the patient has pains during the monsoon, the relief is through simple painkillers such as Paracetamol. Fresh wounds, which are over a week old should be kept under minimum cover to prevent sweat accumulation due to humidity; breathing. Cottons should be clothing of choice."

Persons with joint aches need to take special care during the monsoon. According to Dr. N. M. Gupta, MS, FAMS, FICS, FACS, Director - General Surgery, Fortis. "It is generally believed that joints and fibrous tissue injuries and diseases may show some relation to clouds/humidity and monsoon. Since most of the wounds heal with scar tissue in these areas, chances are that they may become slightly painful during the monsoon. Looking at the possible relationship of rheumatic/rheumatoid activity with cloudy weather. Avoiding food stuff which aggravates the pain (varying from individual to individual), keeping the area clean and dry, use of coconut oil locally over the scar if it is.
