The Battle of Moments: Winning the Right Moments
When we talk of success in sport, any sport, we always think of consistency, perseverance and hard work. Yet, looking back, it?s often the case that the result of a game isn?t necessarily decided when the final whistle blows – it?s often sealed in the split-second decisions and bursts of brilliance players exhibit during the course of the game. We understand the value of this moment when a fielder drops a catch or when in the blink of an eye a defender converts a corner into a rebound goal. Sometimes, even a simple time out taken at a strategic moment can break momentum and completely alter the course of the game.
So here?s what you can do if you want to play, and win, the battle of moments
1. Find that Achilles Heel ? Games are not won by brute strength and speed; you don?t have to attack every single shot to succeed. Even the best teams have chinks in their armor and the best players have moments of vulnerability. Understand the context of the game and take a 360 degree approach. Be aware of the situation, keep a look out for moments of weakness and strike when the time is right.
2. Be Open to Ideas ? Being predictable in your approach to the game can make you a sitting duck ? it will only be a matter of time before your opponent gets the better of you. Instead, be a thinking player ? think laterally and don?t be afraid to try something new. In difficult moments, look to your teammates for ideas as well.
3. Take the Bull by the Horns ? we often end up waiting too long for the ?right moment? to take a chance. Take a leap of faith and take control of the match ? especially when your opponent least expects it. If the right moment isn?t coming your way, go ahead and create one anyway. Take risks, instill fear and create doubts in your adversary.
4. Back Yourself ? More than any other personality attribute, it?s self-confidence that determines success. In the moment, dispel any doubts, have faith in your years of training and hard work and trust your technique. Believe you can!
