About Dr. (Prof.) Vivek Gupta

Dr. Prof. Vivek Gupta is an Interventional Neuroradiologist of national and international repute. He has over 16 years of rich experience in this highly challenging speciality. He graduated from IGMC, Shimla and did his further education and training at PGIMER, Chandigarh. He is MD radiology and has done DM in ‘Neuroimaging and Interventional Neuroradiology’ from PGI, Chandigarh. He has been faculty of the institute for 15 years and was Professor and In-charge of Neuro-intervention program at the institute.He has pioneered many new imaging methods and interventional techniques for the benefit of stroke patients. He started the “Mechanical Thrombectomy” technique for stroke patients at PGI, and many doctors had trained under him for this technique. Many new procedures for treatment of brain aneurysms were first done by him at PGI e.g. “Flow Diversion of difficult and complex Brain Aneurysms”. He is national and international proctor for complex cases and collaborate with the doctors of the country and neighbouring countries in managing their complex patients and doing difficult procedures. He was one of the few doctors in the country who started treating Retinoblastomas (a type of eye tumour in infants and children) with endovascular techniques in order to save eyesight of these children successfully. His work has been much appreciated in national and international forums. He has pioneered research work in the field of use of intra-arterial stem cells for stroke patients, research which has been published in an American Journal of repute. He has a rich teaching experience and many of his students are practising successfully in India and abroad. He has supervised 25 PG thesis during his career. He has 90 research publications to his credit both in highly acclaimed international and national journals. He has published 12 book chapters. He has been invited speaker for national and international forums and conferences for the last 12 years and has given more than 150 lectures. He has also been part of multiple international trials and research being done in this field. He is one of the assessor for the National Board (DNB) for accreditation of their programmes.
