Robot Assisted Radical Prostatectomy

67-years old Ajaib Singh was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had mild burning in urine and poor urinary flow which did not bother him much. He was examined by Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan, Senior Consultant, Urology, Robotic & Kidney Transplant Surgery. A biopsy was done which showed Adenocarcinoma of the prostate.

After suitable investigations, he was taken up for Robotic Radical prostatectomy (RARP), which is the gold standard and treatment for early stage prostate cancer. He underwent RARP by the most advanced da Vinci Robotic system and had an uneventful recovery. The entire surgery was done with the help of the robot and there was hardly a 3-4 cm incision in the supra-pubic area through which the specimen was taken out, apart from 8 mm port site inversion. He received a nerve sparing procedure which resulted in preservation of erectile function and continence.

He had an excellent recovery. His hospital stay was just 2 days (as against 7-8 days for traditional open procedure) and was subsequently discharged. There was minimal blood loss and the patient was up and about after the surgery on the same day. His biopsy report showed complete removal of the tumor and he achieved excellent functional result after the RARP.

RARP has now emerged as the gold standard treatment for cancer of the prostate. The da Vinci Robotic platform gives excellent vision and resolution along with 7 degree movement of instrument which aids in better dissection and application of stitches. The overall pain, hospital stay and cancer free rates are comparable to the best centers in the world.
