Doctor performed extremely complex open-heart surgery on 18-hour old new-born

A new-born was rushed to Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, from a private hospital on 24 October, 2017. The baby, who was born with rare and multiple heart conditions, joined a list of India’s youngest cardiac patients who not only withstood a complex bypass surgery, but also made a quick recovery. After a complete diagnosis, the baby was detected with no communication/pathway between his heart and lungs along with a large hole in his heart. A small closing pipe between aorta & lungs was there, which sustained his life somehow for some time. After knowing the exact nature of abnormality and stabilization, it was imperative to perform a cardiac surgery immediately to restore blood flow to the lungs, since without the surgery, the child would not have survived. Keeping in mind the fragile condition of the baby, and size of hole in her heart, a meticulously planned surgery was performed by Dr Sunil K Kaushal, Director, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery. In the procedure that lasted 4 hours, the closed pulmonary valve was opened up, PDA valve closed and the large hole was almost closed. The baby tolerated the procedure well and was discharged in a few days. We wish him the best of health and happiness!
