Prof (Dr) Mukut Minz awarded Padma Shri

Eminent transplant surgeon and Director – Renal & Pancreas Transplant Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, Prof (Dr) Mukut Minz was honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri for his contribution to the field of Medicine. The President of India conferred Prof Minz with the award during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan today.

Prof Minz, formerly Prof & Head of Department of Renal Transplant Surgery at PGIMER, Chandigarh, joined PGIMER in 1980 and has over 30 years of experience in Transplant Surgery.

He was elevated to the post of Senior Professor in 2008 and became a member of Governing Body of PGIMER in 2015. He received advanced training in cadaver organ retrieval and transplantation at various centres/ universities of Oslo, Norway; Gothenburg, Sweden; Heidelberg, Germany; Munich, Germany; Minnesota, Minneapolis-USA. He set up a new department of Renal Transplant Surgery in PGIMER and performed over 3,300 kidney transplants.

Dr Minz successfully established Combined Kidney-pancreas Transplant Programme for Type 1 diabetics with kidney failure in PGI, which is currently a leading pancreas transplant centre in North India. Under his mentorship, the department also performed several complicated dialysis access procedures (AV Fistulas for hemodialysis).

He recently led the medical team at AIIMS New Delhi that carried out the kidney transplant of Union External Affairs Minister Mrs Sushma Swaraj.

He has trained over 30 transplant surgeons, many of whom are holding academic positions in India, US, UK and Australia, and has been a visiting professor in various universities in India and conferred several awards and honours.
