Making Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority

In the past few years, we have witnessed many unpredicted, inevitable and life-changing events, including pandemics, epidemics and wars between nations that have impacted all of us throughout the world. The pandemic has not only impacted our physiological health but also our family’s shape and size- all of which have profoundly impacted our mental health.

Given the unpredictable course of global events that stroke in the last few years, with a shortage of funding available for mental health, especially in low and middle-income countries - we were certainly not prepared for a decline in mental health among the masses.

Statistically, both anxiety and depressive disorders have risen over 25% during the first year of the pandemic itself. At the same time, mental health services have been severely disrupted and the treatment gap for mental health conditions has widened.

Unemployment, social isolation, economic inequalities, violence and public health emergencies affect whole populations and set progress towards improved well-being back.  To progress as a unit and society, we must deepen the value and commitment we give to mental health as individuals, communities and governments across all sectors.  We must strengthen mental health care so that the full spectrum of mental health needs is met through a community-based network of accessible, affordable, quality services and supports.

Unfortunately, even with growing awareness, Stigma and discrimination attached with mental disorders continue to be a barrier to the right care which often leads to the social exclusion of the mentally ill. However, we can all play our part in increasing awareness, destigmatization and creating an altruistic society collectively. We can collectively create a world in which mental health is valued, promoted, and protected and everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy and avail of mental health services.

So this year let’s pledge to take care of our Mental health as we take care of our Physical health. Below are some of the ways to take care of your Mental health:-

  • Get regular exercise – Just 30 minutes of walking every day can help boost your mood.
  • Make sleep a priority – Stick to a schedule and get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Avoid blue light exposure at night.
  • Try a relaxing activity – Meditation, Muscle Relaxation or breathing exercises.
  • Practice Gratitude – Remind yourself daily of things you are grateful for.
  • Stay connected – Reach out to your friends and family members who can provide emotional support.
  • Eat healthy and regular meals- A balanced diet and plenty of water can improve your energy levels.
