  • FAQ - Bone Marrow Transplant

    1. What is a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)?

A Bone Marrow Transplant, also known as a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT), is a procedure in which diseased or damaged bone marrow is replaced with healthy blood-forming stem cells.

    2. Who may need a Bone Marrow Transplant?

BMT may be recommended for patients with certain blood cancers and serious blood disorders, including:

    • Leukaemia
    • Lymphoma
    • Multiple Myeloma
    • Aplastic Anaemia
    • Thalassaemia
    • Sickle Cell Disease
    • Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)
    • Certain immune deficiency and inherited disorders

The need for transplantation depends on the patient's diagnosis, disease status, age, overall health and response to treatment.

    3. What types of Bone Marrow Transplants are performed at Fortis Gurugram?

Fortis Gurugram offers different types of stem cell transplantation, including:

    • Autologous BMT – using the patient's own stem cells
    • Allogeneic BMT – using stem cells from a donor
    • Matched Related Donor Transplant
    • Matched Unrelated Donor Transplant
    • Haploidentical or half-matched donor transplant
    • Adult and Paediatric BMT

    4. Do I need a fully matched donor for BMT?

Not necessarily. Depending on the patient's condition, transplant options may include a matched sibling, matched unrelated donor or a haploidentical (half-matched) donor. HLA testing and detailed medical evaluation are performed to identify the most appropriate donor option.

    5. How is a donor matched?

Doctors use Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) testing to assess compatibility between the patient and potential donors. A closer HLA match can help improve the suitability of an allogeneic transplant.

    6. How are stem cells collected?

Stem cells may be collected from:

    • Peripheral blood
    • Bone marrow
    • Umbilical cord blood in selected cases

The appropriate collection method depends on the transplant plan and donor assessment.

    7. How does the BMT process work?

Generally, BMT involves three major stages:

Conditioning: Chemotherapy, with or without radiation, prepares the body for transplantation.

Stem Cell Infusion: Healthy stem cells are infused into the patient's bloodstream.

Engraftment: The transplanted stem cells begin producing healthy blood cells in the bone marrow.

    8. How long does recovery take after a BMT?

Recovery varies from patient to patient and depends on the disease, transplant type, complications and overall health. The immune system may take several months to recover, and long-term follow-up is an important part of post-transplant care.

    9. What are the possible risks of a Bone Marrow Transplant?

BMT is a complex treatment and may involve risks such as infections, bleeding, organ-related complications, graft-versus-host disease in allogeneic transplantation, and other treatment-related complications. Your transplant team will explain the individual risks and expected benefits before treatment.

    10. Why choose Fortis Hospital, Gurugram for Bone Marrow Transplant?
