FAQs

  • Is sinusitis contagious?

Sinusitis itself is not contagious, but the viruses or bacteria that cause it can be. The cold viruses that often lead to sinusitis can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets.
  • What is the difference between acute and chronic sinusitis?

Acute sinusitis lasts less than 4 weeks and is often caused by viral infections. Chronic sinusitis persists for more than 12 weeks despite treatment attempts and may require different management approaches including long-term medication or surgery.
  • What causes sinusitis to recur frequently?

Frequent recurrences may be due to underlying conditions like allergies, nasal polyps, deviated septum, immune system disorders, exposure to environmental irritants, or anatomical variations that predispose to sinus blockages.
  • How is sinusitis different from a common cold?

While colds and sinusitis share symptoms, sinusitis specifically involves inflammation of the sinuses. Sinusitis often causes facial pain/pressure, thick colored nasal discharge, reduced sense of smell, and may last longer than a typical cold (7-10 days).
  • When should someone consult a doctor for sinusitis?

Consult a doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days, worsen after initial improvement, include severe headache or facial pain, high fever (>102°F), or visual changes. Seek emergency care for symptoms like confusion, neck stiffness, double vision, or severe swelling.
