Cochlear Implant

A cochlear implant is a sophisticated electronic device designed to provide a sense of sound to individuals with severe to profound hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve.

Procedure Overview

  1. Pre-Operative Evaluation
Before the surgery, patients undergo a thorough assessment including hearing tests, imaging studies (CT or MRI), and consultations with ENT specialists and audiologists to determine candidacy.
  2. Surgical Procedure
The cochlear implant surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 1.5 to 3 hours. During the procedure:
    • A small incision is made behind the ear.
    • The surgeon places the internal implant (receiver-stimulator) under the skin.
    • Electrodes are inserted into the cochlea (the inner ear structure responsible for hearing).
    • The incision is then closed, and the patient is moved to recovery.
  3. Recovery and Activation
    • The patient is usually discharged the same day or after an overnight stay.
    • Healing time is around 2 to 4 weeks.
    • After the surgical site has healed, the external sound processor is fitted and activated.
    • Audiologists then fine-tune the device and initiate auditory training sessions to help the patient interpret sounds.

Post-Operative Care

Patients attend regular follow-ups for device programming (called "mapping"), hearing rehabilitation, and to monitor their progress. Consistent use and training can significantly improve sound perception and communication abilities.

Benefits and Expectations

Cochlear implants can significantly enhance the ability to perceive sounds and understand speech, especially in quiet environments. Outcomes may vary depending on factors such as the age at implantation, the duration of hearing loss, and the consistency of post-operative auditory-verbal therapy. Improved sound clarity and speech comprehension can help individuals regain confidence in social settings, reconnect with friends and family, and lead a more fulfilling life.
