The Safest Lap – A public awareness campaign by Fortis La Femme in association with Chicco and LifeCell
Welcome to the #SafestLap road safety campaign which emphasises making the use of baby car seats as common as seat belts in cars. While several countries mandate the use of baby car seats, unfortunately, there is no such legislation in India.
A 2023 study revealed that 30% of 0–3 year olds and 36% of 8–12 year olds killed were not properly buckled up in cars. Despite this risk, people compromise child safety by carrying infants in their laps or arms while travelling in cars.
The #SafestLap initiative believes that no baby should be a victim of negligence and carelessness, and encourages parents to always use a baby car seat while travelling with their little bundle of joy.
FAQ:
Q1. Can car seats be used for newborns?
It is a misconception that car seats can harm a newborn. Contrary to this belief, car seats are safe and provide good support to the baby’s back and neck. The car seat can be used even for premature babies who are discharged from the hospital.
Q2. Is it safe to hold a baby in arms and laps while travelling in a car?
Absolutely, not. Sudden breaking or even a minor collision can cause you to throw or drop the baby resulting in serious injury. The only way to keep your baby safe while travelling in a car is to use a car seat.
Q3. Does a toddler require a car seat?
Yes, rear-facing car seats are recommended for infants and toddlers because they provide better support for the baby's head, neck, and spine. Once babies reach the maximum height or weight limit allowed by the car seat manufacturer, they need to be put in forward-facing or booster seats.
Q4. Are all car seats the same?
No, car seats vary in design, features, and safety standards. It is important to choose a car seat that fits your child's age, weight, and height. If purchasing a used car seat, ensure it meets the latest safety regulations and has not been recalled.
Q5. Are car seats only necessary for long drives?
Car seats are essential for every car journey, regardless of the distance. Accidents can happen at any time, even during short trips to the grocery store. This makes car seats the best way to protect your baby when travelling in a car.
