Dairy Milk: Is It Truly Beneficial for Your Health?

Growing up, we were given milk daily. However, nowadays, social media has raised questions about the benefits of milk on overall health. Milk's reputation has been tarnished from considering milk calories as the bullet train ticket to better health to suspecting it as the main culprit for various hormonal and cancerous diseases. The present blog describes the hot topic of why is milk bad for adults and cow milk benefits, and also explores the burning question is dairy milk good for health?

Milk and its components:

If you have read recent articles on milk and are wondering, does milk have protein, then you should know that milk is an essential source of calcium and protein. Out of 22 essential nutrients, it holds about 18 essential nutrients. Milk is an effective source of vitamins and nutrients and an important component of a balanced diet. Apart from calcium and protein, it is also an important source of magnesium, vitamins A, B12, K2, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. It is also fortified with vitamin D, which is necessary for calcium absorption.

Calcium sources:

We have read since childhood that calcium is necessary for the formation of teeth and the growth of bones. Calcium is required for strong bones, muscle functioning, nerve signaling, and blood clotting. Strong bones are needed to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Based on the type of milk, the calcium levels vary. Calcium is highest in 1% milk, followed by nonfat milk, 2% milk, and whole milk. Along with calcium, teeth and bones need vitamins K and D, which are also available in milk.  

Proteins:

Proteins are needed in the body for building and repairing muscle cells, bone health, skin health, oxygenation of red blood cells, hormonal regulation, exercise, and healing. If you are wondering does milk have protein then remember that milk is considered a complete protein as it is the source of all nine essential amino acids since the body cannot produce them, thus answering the question.  

Carbohydrates:

Regular milk consumption can help manage diabetes if the source is low-fat dairy, like yogurt. Obtaining carbohydrates from low sources such as low-fat milk or yogurt is beneficial as proteins delay the glucose spike in the blood. Obtaining milk calories and proteins from milk is considered a much better option for proteins when compared to other sources of carbohydrates such as bread, rice, or other grains.  

Nutrients:  

As it is the essential source of various amino acids and proteins, it is considered an important nutrient source for kids transitioning from breast milk or formula milk. It is necessary as it meets the nutritional demands of their growing body.  

Types of milk:

As milk is high in calories, fats, and nutrients, it matters what and how much milk one is consuming. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has identified the four different types of milk and milk calories such as:  

  • Skim milk – It is fat-free milk that has 0 grams of total fat but gives 83 calories of energy.  
  • Low-fat milk – It is the 1% milk that has 2.5 grams of total fat and gives 103 calories of energy.  
  • Reduced fat milk – the 2% milk that has 5 grams of total fat and gives 124 calories of energy.  
  • Whole milk – it has 3.25% milk fat and 8 grams of fat and gives 148 calories of energy.  

Despite the differences in the milk calories, they have the same amount of essential nutrients and proteins. Whole milk is necessary for kids below 2 years of age, while low-fat milk can be given to adults and kids more than 2 years of age.  

Milk consumption and diseases:

Research has answered all the questions regarding why is milk bad for adults by the following:  

  • Research shows that milk benefits childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. Body composition improves due to milk consumption in adults, leading to reduced incidence of obesity and diabetes. Due to low spikes in glucose, it does not cause diabetes in adults.  
  • Milk intake also helps in weight loss due to the immense nutrients and milk calories that control the appetite.  
  • Consumption of about 200-300 ml of milk per day does not increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and in turn, acts as a protective factor for the heart as it is associated with an inverse relation with hypertension and stroke.  
  • Being a good source of calcium, milk has a positive effect on the bone health of children and adolescents.  
  • Evidence shows that milk calories have a protective effect against colorectal, bladder, stomach, and breast cancers. The risk of colorectal and breast cancer is especially low in women who consume milk. 

Risk of consuming milk:

Research shows that fat-free or low-fat dairy is better for the heart than other sources. However, whole milk is also not dangerous for the heart, but consuming large quantities of milk, about a litre per day, can be.  

  • High consumption of milk can lead to prostate cancer in men.  
  • Due to the presence of hormones in milk, increased consumption can lead to the development of endometrial cancers.  
  • Apart from dairy milk, consuming milk products like cheese should also be considered as they can increase the levels of low-density lipoproteins in the body.  
  • Milk can also be one of the sources for acne as most of the time cutting down on milk reduces the acne. This is attributed to the effect of milk on hormones.  
  • Milk can have specific proteins that can cause allergies in children. It can range from colic, constipation, and diarrhea to anaphylactic reactions.  

How much milk should be consumed:

The leading debate on why is milk bad for adults came into existence due to a lack of knowledge on how much milk should be consumed. Consuming not more than 200 grams of milk, which accounts for 7 ounces per day, is important. Excess consumption can lead to various disease conditions, as mentioned above, and can also increase the risk of fractures.  

Alternate sources of dairy:  

There is no comparison between dairy milk and milk from plant sources. As the nutritional sources of cow's milk and plant-based milk are different, research has put forth that cow milk benefits have no alternative.
