Effective Ways to Reduce a Double Chin

admin Mar 06, 2025

In the age of the digital world, where every moment is captured through pictures immediately, having a double chin may make one feel less confident. A double chin occurs due to the deposition of submental fat due to obesity or being overweight. There are no instant corrections except for proper diet, double chin exercises, and surgical ways of correction. The present blog discusses how to reduce a double chin and presents many interesting facts about double chin.

Double chin and its causes:

Double chin is caused by excessive weight deposition occurring between the chin and neck. If you are wondering how to get rid of double chin, first you should know what causes a double chin. Excess fat in the chin and its adjacent areas leads to a double chin. Being overweight and obesity leads to weight gain in all the body parts, including the face and chin, due to fat and water deposition in between the jaw and chin area.

A double chin can also occur due to the loosening of skin due to aging. Apart from obesity and being overweight, a double chin can also be caused by genetics. Genetics plays a vital role in the development of a double chin. Some individuals have a sharp jawline, while others have a relatively softer jawline due to a lack of toned muscles and muscle density, leading to fat deposition.

Treatment options:

If you are wondering how to reduce chin fat there are no magical fixes that can remove or reduce the excess fat overnight. The only way to reduce it is through double chin exercises, a clean diet, and surgical corrections.

Balanced diet:

Smart eating is an important way to chase away excess weight. It is the natural method of getting rid of a double chin. However, one should know how to eat properly and cut down on calories. One should take measures to get appropriate nutrition instead of just restriction. Consuming a balanced diet makes it easier to get rid of excess weight while simultaneously preserving nutrients.

Restrictive diets can make one calorie deficient, and it is not advisable to consume less than 1200 calories/day. However, tracking how much and what to eat may be tiring. One can use various apps that are easy to track. These apps track the calorie intake and the amount of calories burnt. One can also read the labels or ingredients before purchasing foods from grocery stores. However, these will not work if one is not obese.

Double chin exercises:

If you are thinking about how to get rid of double chin non-surgically, then follow these six exercises.

  • The straight jaw cut exercise is done by tilting the head back and viewing the ceiling. Stretch the chin by pushing the lower jaw forward until you feel a stretch. Hold on to the same position by counting to 10. Relax and return to the neutral position. Repeat the same exercise for the next 10 rounds.
  • Ball exercise is done by using a 9-10 inch ball placed under the chin and pressing the chin gently against the ball. Repeat the squeeze 10 times and do three sets each time. Try to do the same multiple times a day.
  • Puckering-up exercises are done by tilting the head back to view the ceiling, puckering the lips, and stretching the skin. Come to the normal position and practice 8-10 repetitions each time.
  • Tongue stretch exercises are done by keeping the head straight, sticking the tongue out, lifting the tongue towards the nose, and holding for 10 seconds. Repeat the exercise 10 times each, and do three repetitions every time.
  • Neck stretch exercises are done by tilting the head back, pressing the tongue against the roof, holding it in the position for 10 seconds, and then repeating the same 10 times in 3 three sets each.
  • Bottom jaw jut exercises are done by tilting the head back, turning the head to the right, sliding the lower jaw forward, holding for 5-10 seconds, and repeating the same on the left side.
  • Neck rotation exercises are done by tucking the chin on the chest and rotating the chin in a clockwise direction 10 times.
  • Exercise tools are small devices that can help reduce excess fat and strengthen the muscles and jaw.
  • One should know that double chin exercises are not the only way to reduce excess chin fat. They can build jaw and neck muscles. The exercises are of little use if one is not following a proper diet and consuming excess calories without any control.
  • If you are considering how to get rid of double chin, then along with chin exercises, targeting overall body weight and muscle buildup also helps to reduce the double chin.

Surgical correction of double chin:

If the double chin persists despite a strict diet plan, counting calories, double chin exercises, and if you are contemplating how to reduce double chin, then surgical correction of the double chin by invasive procedures is the treatment that can be opted for.

Before undergoing the surgical procedures, one should consult the plastic surgeon and know the pros and cons of the procedure. Necessary information on the health condition should be provided to the surgeon so that they can take steps in case of emergencies.

The surgeon may enquire the individual about the need for going under the knife for double chin correction. Information on previous treatments will also be asked. Pictures are taken before and after the procedures for comparison. Markings may also be made on the skin of the chin and neck based on the type of procedure being followed. The various surgical procedures include:

  • Lipolysis: this is a type of sculpting procedure where heat is used from a laser source to melt the fat and sculpt the chin. The procedure is done under local anesthesia. This procedure melts the fat but does not remove the loosened skin or affect the muscles. Swelling, bruising, and pain may be seen immediately after the procedure as side effects of the treatment.
  • Mesotherapy: this is a minimally invasive procedure where fat-dissolving compounds are injected into the jaw through injections. These compounds absorb the fat and reduce the double chin. However, the procedure is time-consuming, necessitating nearly 20 injections with a gap of 1 month between the injections. This has to be done by an experienced dermatologist as improper techniques can lead to nerve damage.
  • Chin tuck surgery tightens the skin near the jaw and chin by removing excess fat from the chin and neck.
  • Neck lift surgery also tightens the muscles and removes the excess skin around the neck and chin.

Double chin is the excess fat in the chin area that does not disappear suddenly overnight. Consuming a clean diet, regularly exercising, and controlling obesity can keep the double chin under control and may even correct it if an individual is obese. Surgical procedures can also be followed if one needs a sculpted neck to reduce the double chin.
