The Health Benefits of Pomegranates

Pomegranates are scientifically known as Punica granatum L. They are the most beautiful fruits that grab our attention due to their ruby-colored arils. They are the juicy fruits that have a deep-rooted history. There are various benefits of eating pomegranate for individuals of all ages. The present blog discusses the benefits of pomegranate seeds, their composition, pomegranate juice benefits, and everything related to them.  

The origin:

Pomegranates have their roots in Iran and Afghanistan and were later exported. They were considered very valuable fruits due to their medicinal and nutritional benefits for centuries. Even though they are cultivated globally, Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean areas are the main sources. This interesting fruit is characterized by a thick outer skin and small, juicy red seeds called arils. The benefits of pomegranate seeds arise from these arils.

  • The benefits of eating pomegranate are from anthocyanins, which are the compounds that give the fruit its red color. These compounds include cyanidin, pelargonidin, and delphinidin, which provide strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  
  • Flavonoids are plant compounds, such as catechins, epicatechins, and flavonols, that have anti-inflammatory and heart-protective effects.
  • Organic Acids such as citric acid, malic acid, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) maintain the fruit’s acidity, contributing to its health benefits.
  • The benefits of pomegranate seeds also arise from the fatty Acids, such as punicic acid, with a potential anti-inflammatory action and the ability to support cardiac health.
  • Alkaloids and Lignans are some lesser-known compounds that include punigratane and lignans. They are found to have hormonal and anti-inflammatory effects.

  • High antioxidant activity: research shows that pomegranate juice benefits the body due to its greater antioxidant capacity than other popular polyphenol-rich fruit juices, such as blueberry, cranberry, and black tea.

  • The pomegranate compounds inhibit the invasion and migration of cancer cells by inhibiting their key enzymes.
  • The pomegranate benefits in men are due to their ability to convert androgens to estrogens and a dehydrogenase enzyme. Thus, they reduce the risk of hormone-related cancers like breast and prostate cancer.

  • Enhancing gut barrier formation by preventing the crossing of harmful bacteria into the bloodstream.
