PEDIATRIC ORTHOPEDICS AT FORTIS MOHALI - Expert Care For Children’s Bone And Joint Conditions
When Your Child Needs a Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist
Whether it is a fracture while playing basketball, a clumsy fall (the severity of which can be underestimated), bone or joint infection, a congenital deformity/deficiency, or growing pains, children commonly face orthopedic issues. From a swelling in arms or legs, bow legs (curved legs), Knock knees (knees knocking), or even concerns about normal growth variations, parents often worry about their child’s gait and posture.
As a parent, you want answers from someone who truly understands children's growing bones because children aren't just small adults. Their bones are actively growing, with growth plates that respond differently to injury and disease. Treatment approaches that work for adults can permanently damage a child's growth potential if applied incorrectly.

At Fortis Mohali, I head (Dr. Gourav Jandial, Child Bone Specialist) the region’s first exclusive pediatric orthopedic service dedicated entirely to child-focused musculoskeletal care. With over a decade of dedicated experience treating complex limb pathologies, I specialize exclusively in children's bone and joint conditions, bringing world-class expertise to families looking for a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula, and North India.
International Expertise, Local Accessibility
For years, families across North India dealing with complex pediatric orthopedic conditions had only two options—travel to metro cities like Delhi or Mumbai for specialized treatment or depend on general orthopaedic care without exclusive pediatric training.
At Fortis Mohali, we've changed that equation. We bring internationally recognized expertise in pediatric deformity correction and limb reconstruction to the Tricity region, eliminating the need for families to travel hundreds of kilometers for specialized care.
I am a fellowship-trained Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon with over a decade of exclusive experience in treating complex musculoskeletal conditions in children. Internationally trained in the USA, Canada, and Japan, I bring global expertise in pediatric deformity correction and limb reconstruction. I am the first and only Indian orthopaedic surgeon selected by the LLRS of North America for advanced pediatric limb reconstruction training. During this fellowship, I worked closely with Dr. Dror Paley, a world authority in limb lengthening and complex deformity correction, gaining expertise in advanced, limb-preserving techniques. Dr. Jandial combines world-class international exposure with compassionate, precision-driven treatment for children.
When to See a Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist
Bring your child for evaluation if you notice common walking problems or signs such as:
- Persistent limping without obvious cause (child refusing to walk)
- One leg appearing shorter or thinner than the other (Limb Length Discrepancy)
- Bow legs (legs curving out) after age 3 or knock knees (knees touching) after age 7
- Feet that turn inward (pigeon toes) or outward severely
- Hip clicking or limited hip movement in infants (signs of hip dysplasia)
- Delay in walking (after 18 months)
- Pain with activity that limits participation (sports injuries in kids)
- Obvious deformity of arm or leg
- Congenital upper/lower limb deformities (birth defects of limbs)
- Concern about your child’s posture or gait (walking style)
In addition to treating common pediatric orthopedic conditions such as clubfoot (twisted foot), Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), bow legs, knock knees, fractures, and sports injuries, I also manage complex pathologies. These include Fibular Hemimelia, Congenital Femoral Deficiency, Brachial Plexus Birth Injuries, Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE), Perthes disease, and deformities related to Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy.
Early evaluation is crucial. It allows us to distinguish normal developmental variations from conditions requiring treatment. Many worried parents leave reassured after I explain that their child's alignment is normal for their age. Others benefit from early intervention that prevents future complications.
Advanced Capabilities at Fortis Mohali
Treating complex pediatric orthopedic conditions requires more than an experienced surgeon—it requires an institutional commitment to pediatric care. Fortis Mohali provides:
- Dedicated Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) — with advanced monitoring for children requiring complex orthopedic care.
- Pediatric anesthesia team — experienced in managing children of all ages safely.
- Advanced imaging — 3D CT, MRI, and PET scan for complex deformity planning.
- Specialized operating rooms — equipped with pediatric-sized instruments and implants.
- Rehabilitation services — pediatric physiotherapists trained in treating children with limb deformities.
This state-of-the-art infrastructure allows me to safely perform complex procedures—from limb lengthening surgeries requiring months of follow-up to intricate clubfoot corrections in newborns.
Bringing World-Class Care Home
My mission is simple: bring world-class, limb-preserving orthopedic care for children to North India—bridging international expertise with local needs. For too long, families have had to choose between local care by general orthopedic surgeons or traveling to distant metro cities for specialized pediatric treatment. At Fortis Mohali, you no longer face that choice.
You get:
- Fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic expertise.
- International-level training in complex deformity correction.
- Access to advanced treatment options (limb lengthening, guided growth, Ponseti method for clubfoot).
- Multidisciplinary pediatric team support.
- Close to home—serving Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula, and surrounding areas.
Whether your child has a common condition like clubfoot or a rare, complex limb deformity, you deserve a specialist who has dedicated their career to understanding and treating children's musculoskeletal conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should clubfoot treatment begin? Ideally within the first week or two of life. The Ponseti method (non-surgical casting) works best when started early, as infant bones and ligaments are more flexible. However, even older children can benefit from treatment, though it may require more extensive casting or surgery.
Will my child with bow legs need surgery? Most children with bow legs have physiologic bowing that resolves naturally by age 2-3. We monitor these children without treatment. However, if bowing persists, worsens, or shows signs of Blount's disease, bracing or surgery may be necessary to prevent permanent deformity.
How long does limb lengthening take? It depends on how much lengthening is needed. At approximately 1 mm per day, lengthening 4 cm takes about 40 days. The total treatment time includes the lengthening phase plus a consolidation phase (allowing the new bone to harden), typically 3-6 months in total. Dr. Jandial is one of the very few surgeons in India who performs limb lengthening without any external fixator.
Is pediatric orthopedic surgery safe? Yes, when performed by experienced pediatric orthopedic surgeons. Children tolerate surgery well and heal faster than adults. We use pediatric-specific anesthesia protocols, child-sized implants, and age-appropriate surgical techniques to maximize safety.
Will my child's condition affect them long-term? With appropriate treatment, most children with orthopedic conditions grow up to lead normal, active lives. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are key. Conditions like untreated clubfoot or DDH can cause lifelong disability, but treated properly, outcomes are excellent.
Do you treat children from outside the Tricity area? Absolutely. We regularly treat children from across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and even other states. Many of my patients visit from other countries like Canada. For complex conditions requiring long-term follow-up (like limb lengthening), we coordinate care to minimize travel burden while ensuring optimal outcomes.
