Phalsa Berries: A Nutritious Summer Fruit for Better Health
Phalsa berries, also known as Sherbet berries, are highly nutritious summer fruits native to India. These small-sized fruits are commonly consumed fresh and are widely used for making refreshing sherbets, syrups, and drinks.
Phalsa is power-packed with nutrients and contains almost 75% water, making it an excellent hydrating fruit for summer. Ripe phalsa fruits are rich in vitamins A and C, minerals like iron and phosphorus, and dietary fibre while being low in calories and fat.
The fruit is also a rich source of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, anthocyanins, and polyphenols. These antioxidants help counteract damaging free radicals in the body and reduce oxidative stress, thereby playing an important role in preventing chronic illnesses such as cancer and heart diseases. Phalsa can also help reduce inflammation, which is beneficial in conditions like diabetes and rheumatism.
Phalsa is especially beneficial for diabetic patients as studies show it may help stimulate insulin activity and provide antioxidant support. It contains a sufficient amount of dietary fibre (5.53 g/100 g), including both soluble and insoluble fibre, which helps reduce the risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.
With a low Glycemic Index (approximately 5.3) and high fibre content, phalsa helps slow sugar absorption and prevents sudden sugar spikes, leading to better blood sugar control. Its juicy texture makes it an excellent summer fruit option for diabetics when consumed fresh and in moderation. However, it is best avoided as sherbets due to added sugars.
