World IBD Day: Understanding Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the Emerging Role of Intestinal Ultrasound

Dr. Shivam Kalia May 19, 2026

Every year, World IBD Day reminds us of the growing burden of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) — a chronic condition that affects millions globally and is increasingly being diagnosed in India, especially among young adults.

As a gastroenterologist, I frequently meet patients who have spent months — sometimes years — ignoring symptoms like abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, blood in stools, weight loss, or fatigue, assuming these are temporary digestive problems. However, persistent symptoms may point toward underlying conditions such as Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, the two major forms of IBD.

Understanding IBD: More Than Just a Digestive Disorder

IBD is an immune-mediated disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the gastrointestinal tract, leading to chronic inflammation.

The disease often follows a relapsing-remitting course, meaning patients experience periods of flare-ups and remission. Beyond the intestines, IBD can also affect joints, skin, eyes, liver, nutrition, and mental health, significantly impacting quality of life.

Early diagnosis and regular monitoring are critical in preventing complications and improving long-term outcomes.

The Changing Landscape of IBD Monitoring

Traditionally, colonoscopy and imaging scans have been the primary tools for evaluating IBD activity. While highly effective, these investigations may sometimes be invasive, expensive, or inconvenient for repeated monitoring.

In recent years, Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS) has emerged as a promising, patient-friendly, and non-invasive tool for assessing bowel inflammation in IBD patients.

We at Fortis hospital perform IUS for monitoring disease activity.

What is Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS)?

Intestinal Ultrasound is a non-invasive bedside imaging technique that helps visualize bowel inflammation in real time without radiation exposure.

Some advantages of IUS include:

  • Quick and painless assessment
  • No radiation exposure
  • Useful for monitoring disease activity
  • Helpful in evaluating treatment response
  • Improved patient comfort and convenience

Globally, IUS is increasingly becoming an important part of modern IBD management due to its safety, accessibility, and effectiveness.

A Message to Patients

If you are experiencing persistent digestive symptoms such as:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Blood in stools
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Recurrent abdominal pain
  • Persistent fatigue

Please do not ignore them.

Timely evaluation, accurate diagnosis, and individualized treatment can help patients lead healthy and productive lives.

IBD is a lifelong condition, but with modern therapies, multidisciplinary care, nutritional guidance, and evolving technologies like Intestinal Ultrasound, disease control and improved quality of life are increasingly achievable.

“Awareness leads to early diagnosis. Early diagnosis changes lives.”
