Fortis Hospital Anandapur successfully treated a 25-year-old man with severe pneumonia caused by a betel nut lodged in his airway after consuming paan.
A team of doctors at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, led by Dr. Sushmita Roychowdhury, Director – Pulmonology, successfully treated a case of severe post-obstructive pneumonia caused by an impacted foreign body. A 25-year-old male developed persistent cough and choking after consuming paan at a wedding. Despite consultations with multiple specialists, his symptoms persisted and he appeared increasingly unwell.
A detailed evaluation at Fortis Hospital, including a CT scan, revealed the presence of a retained foreign body in the airway. The patient was first managed for pneumonia over five days. Subsequently, Dr. Roychowdhury performed a bronchoscopy with cryobiopsy, successfully removing a large piece of betel nut that was lodged in the airway and causing obstruction.
Following the procedure, the patient showed significant clinical improvement and is now stable and ready for discharge.
