103-Year-Old Bedridden Woman Walks Again After Complex Hip Replacement Surgery at Fortis Manesar

- Turned away by multiple hospitals due to her age, the centenarian regained independent mobility within weeks of surgery -

Manesar, 8th July 2026: At 103 years of age, nothing could be more daunting for a centenarian, than a sudden fall in the washroom resulting in a severe hip fracture, leaving her bedridden for nearly a month. However, in an extraordinary display of resilience and advanced medical excellence, doctors at Fortis Hospital Manesar successfully performed a highly complex hip replacement surgery on a 103-year-old woman, helping the centenarian regain mobility and walk independently within weeks of the procedure. The surgery was led by Dr. Rohit Lamba, Director- Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Manesar, along with his team, who used an advanced implant technique specially designed to minimise surgical risks in extremely elderly patients.

Patient Mrs. Rahamat Anisha, a resident of Bulandshahr, suffered a displaced fracture of the hip following a fall in her washroom. Hip fractures are among the most serious injuries in elderly individuals, particularly those with osteoporosis, often leading to prolonged immobility and a significant decline in overall health. Owing to her advanced age and the associated surgical risks, she was reportedly refused surgery at multiple hospitals in her hometown and remained bedridden for nearly a month, enduring severe pain, and restricted movement. Her relatives in Gurugram later consulted specialists at Fortis Hospital Manesar, following a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation and was admitted for advanced treatment.

After being admitted to Fortis Hospital, Manesar, the patient underwent comprehensive medical assessment and following risk optimisation, the orthopaedic team led by Dr Rohit Lamba successfully performed a right modular bipolar hemiarthroplasty under spinal anaesthesia. In a significant clinical decision aimed at minimising peri-operative risk, the team adopted for an advanced uncemented collared implant technique using USFDA-approved American implants instead of conventional cemented fixation. The approach helped avoid potential bone cement-related complications, reduced surgical time, and enabled immediate post-operative weight bearing. The entire surgery was completed in just 30 minutes. The patient’s post-operative recovery remained uneventful, and she was discharged in a stable condition within 6 days. At follow-up, the patient showed remarkable improvement and was able to walk independently without the support of a walker or walking stick.

Giving details of the case, Dr Rohit Lamba, Director, Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Manesar, said “In
this case, the patient had already been bedridden for nearly a month, placing her at high risk for complications such as bed sores, pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis and prolonged morbidity. The case was particularly challenging due to the patient’s advanced age and high peri-operative risk profile. Published reports of hip arthroplasty in centenarians remain extremely limited globally, making this a notable example of how coordinated multidisciplinary care and advanced surgical planning can deliver positive outcomes even in highly complex elderly patients.”

Mr. Indrajeet Kumar Singh, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Manesar said, “Successfully helping a 103-year-old patient regain mobility and independence after a complex hip fracture is a noteworthy clinical achievement and reflects the advanced orthopaedic expertise available at Fortis Manesar. This case demonstrates that age alone should not be a barrier to treatment. With the right clinical assessment, surgical planning, and multidisciplinary care, even extremely elderly patients can achieve meaningful recovery and a significantly improved quality of life.”
