14-Year-Old Boy’s Severed Hand Successfully Reimplanted in a Surgical Marvel at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur

Kolkata, May 2025: In a landmark surgical intervention at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, Kolkata, a 14-year-old boy from Murshidabad who suffered a traumatic amputation of his right hand has been given a new lease on life after a successful hand reimplantation surgery. The child, Samir had been turned away from five different medical colleges before being brought to Fortis, where a timely and complex surgery saved his limb.

The accident occurred around noon on May 1st, when Samir’s right hand was completely severed. His family rushed him to multiple hospitals, desperately seeking help. After being denied treatment due to the complexity of the case, he arrived at Fortis Anandapur around midnight and was promptly admitted at 12 am on May 2nd.

Within an hour of arrival, the surgical team led by Dr. Akhilesh Kumar Agarwal, Consultant, Plastic Surgery, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, took the child into surgery. The operation began at 1 am and lasted approximately five hours.

The reimplantation involved meticulous reconstruction of all vital structures. The bone was stabilized using K-wires, the tendons were carefully repaired, and the most critical aspect, blood vessels were reconstructed to restore proper blood circulation to the limb.

Dr. Akhilesh Kumar Agarwal, Consultant, Plastic Surgery, Fortis Hospital Anandapur said, “Reimplantation of hand is a life-changing surgery for the child. With his whole life ahead of him, we are happy and confident that he will regain good function of hand and lead a normal life. We always try to reimplant any amputated part when possible, and there can be no greater gratification than seeing the patient going back to mainstream life.”

The surgery was successful, and Samir is currently stable and under observation. He will undergo a course of physiotherapy and, with time, should regain good hand function.

Sharing the family’s experience, Mr. B Sheikh, the patient’s grandfather, said, “One afternoon, my grandson while playing near a crop-cutting machine, severed his palm and wrist. After initial treatment at a local hospital, we rushed him to Kolkata for further care. However, we faced significant challenges getting him admitted at several hospitals due to unavailability of beds and suitable treatment options. Fortunately, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur was the only hospital that provided immediate assistance. Dr. A.K. Agarwal took charge around midnight and performed the plastic surgery that continued for approximately five hours. The surgery was successful, and we are hopeful for our child’s speedy recovery.”

This remarkable case not only highlights Fortis Hospital Anandapur’s surgical expertise in trauma and microsurgery, but also emphasizes the importance of quick, coordinated medical response in time-sensitive emergencies like limb amputations.
