18-year-old Male from Haveli treated for complex pancreatitis at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi

Bagalkote, 1st July 2025 – Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi successfully treated an 18-year-old male patient suffering from a severe and life-threatening case of Necrotizing Pancreatitis. Necrotizing pancreatitis is an aggravated/extreme form of acute pancreatitis where a portion of the pancreas dies due to inflammation and reduced blood flow. Under the expert care of Dr. Santhosh Kumar S C, Consultant Gastroenterologist and his team, the patient underwent a minimally invasive thoracocentesis procedure for treatment and the patient was discharged within 2 days post-surgery.

Patient Anil (name changed), a resident of Haveli, was admitted to Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi with complaints of intermittent abdominal pain, multiple episodes of vomiting, body pain, and no bowel movement for over a week. A chest X-ray revealed patchy areas in the lower part of his left lung, suggesting a possible infection. A subsequent detailed CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis showed signs of pancreatic inflammation, with most of the pancreatic tissue appearing poorly perfused, indicating damage, while only a small part showed signs of healthy function. The scan also revealed mild fluid accumulation in the abdomen and around both the lungs, consistent with a diagnosis of severe necrotizing pancreatitis.

Explaining the procedure, Dr. Santhosh Kumar S C, Consultant Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, said, "Given the severity of the patient's condition, we recommended a minimally invasive thoracocentesis procedure (Thoracentesis, also known as pleural fluid aspiration, is a medical procedure where fluid is removed from the space between the lung and chest wall (pleural space) to manage complications. Through this procedure, we drained the fluid that had accumulated near the lungs, helping to relieve symptoms. Through combined efforts, including critical care and multi-disciplinary consultation, we were able to stabilize his condition. We're pleased to share that he responded well to our treatment. Following the procedure, the patient's post-operative recovery remained uneventful, and after being treated with appropriate medications, he was discharged in a stable condition with post-surgical care instructions for continued recovery."
