25-Year-Old Woman from Bijapur successfully treated for Abdominal Tuberculosis via Robot-aided surgery at Fortis Bannerghatta Road

Bijapur, June 2025: Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, successfully treated a rare and complex case of abdominal tuberculosis caused by atypical mycobacteria — a bacterial infection known for causing serious complications - through advanced robot-assisted surgery. The procedure, led by Dr Usha BR, Consultant - OBGYN, Robotic surgeon, Fertility & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru gave a new lease of life to a 25-year-old patient, who made a swift recovery and was discharged in stable condition just three days post the surgery.

Patient Ms. Albeli (name changed), a 25-year-old woman from Bijapur, had been suffering from chronic abdominal pain and a persistent pelvic lump for over six months. Married for five years and otherwise in good health, her condition had severely impacted her quality of life. She had previously undergone open surgery at a local hospital in the city, which was complicated by a bowel injury and failed to produce a conclusive diagnosis. Suspected to be a case of abdominal tuberculosis, she was administered standard TB medication, but her condition did not improve.

In search of a definitive diagnosis and effective treatment, Ms. Albeli approached Fortis Hospital, Bangalore, where a detailed clinical diagnosis revealed severe pelvic adhesions and an infection involving the ovary and fallopian tubes- findings that had been missed in the earlier medical assessments, conducted at the local hospital. Considering the complexity of the case, Dr. Usha recommended robotic-assisted surgery. This advanced, minimally invasive procedure allowed for the precise removal of the adhesions and the infected tissues, minimizing risks and facilitating a smoother recovery.

Explaining the procedure Dr Usha BR, Consultant - OBGYN, Robotic surgeon, Fertility & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru, said, “This was an exceptionally complex case, primarily due to complications from a prior surgery that had resulted in a bowel injury and extensive internal scarring. The pelvic organs, including the intestines, fat layers, and reproductive structures—were severely adhered to one another, making surgical navigation extremely difficult. Using robotic-assisted technology, we were able to precisely separate these structures, remove the pelvic mass, clear accumulated blood from the fallopian tubes, and excise an abnormal tract that had formed due to a previous infection. The robotic platform provided the enhanced visibility, precision, and control needed to safely complete the procedure without causing additional damage. Achieving such a safe and thorough outcome would not have been possible without the support of advanced surgical technology and a meticulous operative approach.”

Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, said, "This case highlights the strength of Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, in delivering highly specialised care using cutting-edge medical technology. Through expert clinical evaluation, advanced imaging, and minimally invasive surgical techniques such as robotic-assisted surgery, we continue to offer comprehensive and effective solutions for complex health conditions. It reflects our commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centric care.”
