54-Year-Old Liver Transplant Patient from Uzbekistan undergoes Successful Kidney Transplant at Fortis Noida
- The Son who was the donor, donated both the liver and kidney and saved mother’s life twice -13th March 2025 is World Kidney Day
Noida, 12 March 2025: In an extraordinary testament to medical excellence, the team of Nephrologists and Urologists at Fortis Hospital, Noida, successfully performed a life-saving kidney transplant on a 54- year-old woman from Uzbekistan, who was suffering from kidney failure. The patient had a history of liver transplant where her son had donated a part of his liver. The Kidney Transplant was conducted under the expertise of Dr. Anuja Porwal, Director, Nephrology, alongwith Dr. Piyush Varshney, Director, Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Noida.
The patient had undergone a liver transplant in 2023, with her son as the donor. A few months ago, she was diagnosed with kidney disease and started medication. However, her condition continued to deteriorate. Given her pre-existing liver transplant and the immunosuppressive medications, she had a weakened immune system, making dialysis a risky long-term solution. Despite undergoing five weeks of dialysis, her condition remained critical as frequent sessions risked damaging her transplanted liver due to sudden drop in blood pressure and increased and recurrent infection risks from her immuno - compromised state. Thus, undergoing a kidney transplant was the only viable option, however finding a suitable donor remained a challenge.
Amidst these challenges, the patient’s son, who had already saved her life earlier by donating a part of his liver, stepped forward again, this time to donate his left kidney. The transplant was successfully conducted at Fortis Hospital, Noida, with both mother and son recovering well. The son was discharged within five days, demonstrating the safety of organ donation even for individuals who have previously donated an organ.
Dr. Anuja Porwal, Director, Nephrology, Fortis Hospital, Noida, said, "This case was medically challenging due to the patient’s pre-existing liver transplant, which required meticulous management of immunosuppressive medications and balancing infection risks. It also required protection of liver during dialysis and perioperative period with optimizing care for new transplanted kidney. The success of this transplant is a testament to the expertise of our team and the safety of organ donation, even in complex medical scenarios and making the fact evident that kidney transplant is the best treatment available for kidney failure patients.”
Dr. Piyush Varshney, Director, Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Noida, added, "The courage and selflessness shown in this case is truly inspiring. It is rare for a single donor to save the same recipient’s life twice, and this case also underscores the complexities of performing a kidney transplant in a patient with a pre-existing liver transplant. There were adhesions due to previous liver surgery, making another incision more difficult. The successful surgery and smooth recovery highlight the advancements in organ transplantation and how it can offer a second chance at life. The patient, once battling multi-organ failure, is now leading a healthy and active life.”
Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Noida, said, "This case is a remarkable example of medical expertise and compassionate care. Performing a kidney transplant in a patient with a prior liver transplant required exceptional coordination and surgical precision. Our team navigated the complexities of immunosuppression management and organ compatibility to ensure a successful outcome. This reflects Fortis Noida’s commitment to delivering advanced transplant care and offering patients a new lease on life."
