58-Year-Old Deceased Donor Gives New Lease of Life to Multiple Patients Through Multi-Organ Donation at Fortis Anandapur 

– Green corridors enable donated lungs to reach NSCBI Airport in 10 minutes and a kidney to reach Command Hospital, Alipore, in seven minutes – 

– Two kidneys, lungs and corneas allocated to recipients across Kolkata and Gurugram following the family’s selfless decision – 

 Anandapur, August 26, 2026: In an inspiring act of compassion, the family of a 58-year-old patient donated his organs following his declaration of brain death at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, offering renewed hope to multiple patients awaiting transplants. The donor had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage and was declared brain-dead in accordance with established medical protocols. Honouring his lifelong commitment to helping others, his family consented to donate his kidneys, lungs, and corneas. 

Following the family’s consent, the hospital’s transplant team immediately initiated the organ-donation process and coordinated with the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) and other relevant authorities for allocation of the organs. The donor’s heart was also offered for allocation through ROTTO and subsequently the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO); however, no suitable recipient could be identified. 

One kidney was allocated to a recipient at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, while the second was allocated to Command Hospital, Alipore. The lungs were allocated to Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, and the corneas were entrusted to Disha Eye Hospitals, Barrackpore, to help restore sight. 

To ensure the timely transportation of the organs, green corridors were created from Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport and Command Hospital, Alipore. The corridor to the airport passed through Ruby, Science City and Sector V, enabling the donated lungs to cover approximately 20 km and reach the airport in just 10 minutes for onward transportation to Gurugram. The donated kidney reached Command Hospital, Alipore, within 07 minutes. 

The process required close coordination among the hospital’s doctors, nurses, transplant coordinators, and support teams, along with ROTTO, NOTTO, the Kolkata Traffic Police, airport authorities and the respective recipient hospitals. Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, supported the donor’s family throughout the process and completed all required medical and administrative procedures in accordance with prescribed protocols. 

To honour the donor and acknowledge the family’s selfless decision, doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff formed a Guard of Honour as the donor was taken for organ retrieval. Standing together in solemn tribute, the hospital team paid its respects to the donor whose final act of generosity offered hope and a new lease of life to several patients. 

The donor’s son, Dr Soumyadeep Dasgupta, a former Junior Resident at AIIMS Kalyani who is currently preparing for advanced medical studies, said, “Losing my father has left a void that can never be filled, but knowing that his final act has given others a second chance at life brings us some comfort amid our immense grief. He always believed in helping those in need, and as his son and as a doctor, I felt that donating his organs was the most meaningful way to honour the person he was and the values he lived by. We hope that a part of him will continue to live on through the lives he has touched and that his legacy of compassion will inspire others to consider organ donation.”
