Advanced Reconstructive Surgery at Fortis Escorts Faridabad Saves One-Year-Old Child with Rare Kidney Tube Blockage

-Timely surgery helped preserve kidney function after the child was admitted with fever, loose stools and reduced urine output

Faridabad, 25th August 2026: Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad successfully performed a
complex, reconstructive surgery on a 1-year-old child suffering from a Left Primary Obstructive
Megaureter - a rare congenital urinary tract blockage. The complex reconstructive surgery was led by
Dr. Anup Gulati, Director – Urology at Fortis Escorts Faridabad along with the paediatric team headed
by Dr. Amit Gupta, Director Paediatrics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.

The child was admitted to Fortis Escorts Faridabad with a month-long history of recurrent fever, loose
stools, and reduced urine output. On evaluation, doctors diagnosed the child with a rare congenital
urinary tract blockage. The tube carrying urine from the left kidney to the bladder was abnormally
enlarged and blocked at its connection with the bladder. This obstruction caused urine to accumulate
in the kidney, putting the young child at risk of kidney damage and serious infections.

Following a detailed clinical examination, the urology team did a minimally invasive laparoscopic
surgery to reshape and reimplant the enlarged ureter tube carrying urine from the kidney and
reattached it to the bladder to clear the blockage. A small temporary tube (stent) was inserted to keep
it open while it healed. Following the operation, the patient experienced a smooth and uneventful
recovery. After three days of close monitoring, supportive care, and antibiotic treatment, the child was
discharged in stable, healthy condition.

Sharing details of the case, Dr. Anup Gulati, Director, Urology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, said,
"Primary Obstructive Megaureter is a rare condition seen in children. If not treated on time, it can lead
to repeated infections and gradually affect kidney function. In this case, timely diagnosis and surgery
helped us address the blockage and preserve the child's kidney. The child recovered well after the
procedure and was discharged in a stable condition."

Dr. Amit Gupta, Director Paediatrics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, said, "Children who have rare
conditions in their urinary tract tend to have non-specific signs such as fever and abdominal upset that
tend to hide the real cause of the condition. A comprehensive paediatric evaluation helped us identify
the true cause of the problem and treat the infection as well as prepare the child for surgery."

Dr. Abhishek Sharma, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, said, “Handling complicated
cases in young children requires sophisticated infrastructural backup along with expertise and a synchronised clinical environment. The success in this case reflects our strength in providing specialised
healthcare services for intricate surgical procedures for children.”
