Organisms which causes Baby bottle syndrome are:-
Cariogenic Microorganisms e.g.-Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are the main
bacteria found in early childhood caries. Lactobacilli also play a role in the progression of caries,
but not in their initiation. These bacteria consume and metabolize carbohydrates like glucose,
fructose, sucrose and produce lactic acid. This acid lowers the intraoral pH and causes
demineralization of tooth enamel. Prolonged demineralization eventually leads to corrosion of
denture and cavitation.( Credit :- Tanzer JM, Livingston J, Thompson AM. The microbiology of
primary dental caries in humans.)
Tooth decay by Baby bottle feeding usually occurs on the front teeth, or ‘incisors’. Cavities, or
“caries,” are caused by too much sugar on the teeth. The sugar is found in milk or formula feeds, as
well as other artificially sweetened juice ( given by sippers) and processed food snacks.
How can you help prevent your kid’s teeth?:
Not allowing your child to fall asleep with a bottle filled with juice or milk.
Giving your child plain water whenever he/she is thirsty & specially after all meals.
As the toddler grows up - explain the importance of rinsing of oral cavity with water post meals.
Regular tooth brushing / Proper dental hygiene and cleanings are essential, especially in the evenings before going to bed.
