FROM CLASSROOMS TO COMMUNITIES: FORTIS HOSPITAL KALYAN EMPOWERS KALYANKARS WITH LIFE-SAVING CPR SKILLS THROUGH ‘HAR GHAR HERO’ INITIATIVE

~ Through hands-on CPR training sessions across schools, colleges and public spaces, Fortis Hospital Kalyan aims to create a network of confident first responders within the community ~

Fortis Hospital, Kalyan — A Fortis Network Hospital (a part of the IHH Healthcare multinational network) has taken its 'Har Ghar Hero' initiative forward through a comprehensive CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training initiative across key locations in Kalyan. Moving beyond the hospital, the initiative has reached educational institutions and public spaces, including Birla College, Cambria School and Metro Mall, Kalyan, training over 500 individuals i.e. students, teachers, employees and retailers. The initiative has equipped them with essential life-saving skills to act as first responders in their own communities and operational spaces.

Led by Dr. Manjeet Singh Arora, Senior General Physician, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, the program aimed to create a network of trained first responders within the community. These are citizens with no medical background who have been equipped to recognise a cardiac arrest and act in the critical first moments, when timely CPR can mean the difference between life and death.

Cardiac emergencies often occur unexpectedly. Immediate intervention through CPR can help maintain blood circulation and oxygen supply to vital organs until professional medical help arrives, yet lack of awareness and hesitation among bystanders often delays this timely action. Through this initiative, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan aims to bridge that gap, making CPR knowledge more accessible, and empowering individuals to respond confidently during emergencies.

CPR training provides individuals with practical skills to identify a cardiac emergency, perform chest compressions correctly and take appropriate immediate action. Training community members can significantly improve emergency response capabilities. A trained bystander can become the crucial link between the occurrence of a cardiac event and the arrival of advanced medical care.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr Mohit Wankhade, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Kalyan, said, “Cardiac emergencies require immediate action, and timely CPR can make a significant difference before a patient reaches the hospital. Through this initiative, our aim is to empower more people with the confidence and skills required to respond effectively during emergencies. Creating awareness and training more citizens can help build a safer and more prepared community.”

Dr. Naresh Chandra, Director (Education), B. K. Birla College, Kalyan, spoke about the initiative, “Educational institutions have a responsibility beyond the classroom, and CPR training equips our students with skills that can make a real difference during a medical emergency. We are pleased to partner with Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, through Har Ghar Hero, and look forward to taking this initiative forward through more sessions for our students, staff and the wider community.”

Fortis Hospital Kalyan remains committed to expanding this initiative across the region. As part of the next phase, the hospital is scheduled to conduct CPR training sessions at Pharmacy College on 12 October 2026, Birla College (for teachers & students) on 16 October 2026, and Lodha School (Phase 2) on 26 October 2026, as part of the ongoing Har Ghar Hero initiative.
