Kolkata, May 2025: Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, today inaugurated a state-of-the-art Epilepsy Clinic— that aims to provide holistic care for patients living with epilepsy. The clinic will cater to individuals across age groups, from children to the elderly, offering them a structured and comprehensive approach to epilepsy management.
The launch also marked the launch of the Epilepsy Helpline Number -8981117194, a patient-centric initiative designed to provide round-the-clock guidance during seizure episodes and other emergencies. This helpline will be managed by trained personnel, ensuring that patients and caregivers receive timely and accurate assistance during emergencies.
The Epilepsy Clinic is structured to go beyond seizure control and will offer support for co-morbid psychiatric and psycho-social conditions, which often affect over one-third of individuals with epilepsy. The multi-disciplinary team includes neurologists, psychologists, and other allied specialists to support the patient’s physical, emotional, and mental health concerns.
Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, Dr. Amit Halder, Director, Neurology, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, said, “In Kolkata alone, epilepsy affects an estimated 50,000–80,000 people so this is a step in the right direction to identify the disease in time and have proper management. This clinic will offer comprehensive services that include 3 Tesla MRI and long-term video EEG monitoring. This clinic will leverage advanced diagnostics alongside clinical expertise to deliver end-to-end epilepsy care. While the clinic will run on an OPD basis, inpatient support will also be available for those requiring admissions.”
Dr. Aparajita Chatterjee, Consultant, Neurology, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, said, “By offering a comprehensive, accessible, and empathetic approach, Fortis Anandapur aims to become a regional hub for epilepsy treatment and awareness. This clinic allows us to track patterns, adjust treatment dynamically, and intervene before complications arise. Early and precise intervention can dramatically improve outcomes; in fact, nearly two-thirds of our patients when diagnosed and treated appropriately, can easily achieve seizure freedom and lead productive and fulfilling lives. The others can also benefit significantly from surgical intervention, ketogenic diets and various new advances as merited when identified timely.”
Dr Swati Kumar, Consultant, Neurology, Fortis Hospital Anandapur, said, “Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions, which is often misunderstood and associated with stigma. It is a manageable condition. With proper medication patients can lead a fulfilling and active life. This initiative is to ensure proper awareness, accessibility and adherence to treatment as well as follow-up, which is key to seizure-freedome.”.
Epilepsy remains a highly treatable condition, and with proper diagnosis and consistent medical supervision, 70–80% of patients can lead normal lives. The Fortis Epilepsy Clinic is a step forward in dismantling the stigma, misinformation, and treatment gaps that currently surround the condition.
