Fortis Hospital Mohali Organises Week-Long Activities to Mark National Nutrition Week

Nutrition awareness sessions, healthy tiffin competition and outreach programmes promote balanced diets and healthier eating practices across age groups

Mohali, September 7, 2026: To create awareness about the importance of good nutrition and healthy eating, National Nutrition Week was observed at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, from September 1 to 7, under the theme “Nourish Today, Thrive Tomorrow.” The week-long initiative focused on promoting balanced dietary choices, adequate nutrition and sustainable food practices for lifelong health and well-being.

A series of activities, including cooking demonstrations, nutrition workshops, poster contests, health screenings and expert talks, were organised as part of the celebrations. Dr Sonia Gandhi, Head, Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, Fortis Hospital Mohali, highlighted the importance of a balanced diet in addressing malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and lifestyle-related diseases.

Dr Sonia Gandhi, Head, Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, Fortis Hospital Mohali, said, “Good nutrition is not about following restrictive diets or making drastic changes; it is about making informed, balanced and sustainable choices every day. Through National Nutrition Week, our endeavour is to take this message beyond the hospital and engage people across age groups on the importance of healthy eating, safe food practices and adequate nutrition. By building awareness early and encouraging practical dietary habits, we can contribute to healthier lives and better long-term well-being.”

The celebrations commenced with a ‘Healthy Tiffin Competition’, which witnessed participation from 78 students and 12 teachers from schools across the Tricity. Students showcased nutritious food options while highlighting the importance of balanced diets and healthy eating habits. Dr Sonia Gandhi and Dr Parvinder Chawla, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital Mohali, also interacted with the participants and sensitised them about nutrition.

The following day, Dr Gandhi conducted a special session on ‘Healthy Eating Practices’ for patient attendants in the IPD lobby, which was attended by more than 60 people. On the third day, she conducted an informative session on ‘Benefits of Healthy Eating: Myths & Facts’ for more than 70 students of Khalsa College, Mohali, covering balanced diets, adequate hydration, healthy eating practices and common nutrition myths.

Continuing the hospital’s outreach across age groups, a Nutrition and Food Hygiene Awareness Programme was conducted for children from underserved communities at Ashiyana, Panchkula. The session focused on safe food hygiene practices, food security and nurturing healthier habits among children.

An interactive Nutrition Awareness Session for Senior Citizens, themed “From Microbes to Metabolism,” was also conducted. The session explored the role of the gut microbiome in digestion, nutrient utilization and metabolic health, along with practical dietary strategies to support gut health, immunity and healthy ageing.

Through these initiatives, Fortis Hospital, Mohali aims to extend nutrition awareness beyond the hospital and encourage healthier, sustainable food practices among children, adults, families and senior citizens.
