September 1st, 2026: Fortis Hospital, Noida has successfully performed a keyhole procedure 
known as Robotic VEIL - robot-assisted Video Endoscopic Inguinal Lymphadenectomy a minimally 
invasive procedure to remove cancerous groin lymph nodes in a 32-year-old man diagnosed with 
Penile Cancer. The complex case was managed by a team led by Dr. Shailendra Kumar Goel, Director 
of Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida.

The patient had a history of recurrent urinary tract infections and phimosis, a condition in which the 
foreskin cannot be fully retracted. Further evaluation confirmed penile cancer, and imaging revealed 
that the disease had spread to a single groin lymph node, with no evidence of distant metastasis. Penile 
cancer is a rare malignancy, accounting for less than 1% of cancers among men globally and is 
predominantly diagnosed in those over 55 years of age. The patient’s young age therefore made the 
case particularly unusual. Phimosis is a recognised risk factor for penile cancer, as it can lead to chronic 
inflammation and irritation.

The medical team performed the five-hour procedure using the advanced Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical
system, accessing the affected lymph nodes through small incisions in the thigh. By injecting a safe 
fluorescent dye (ICG) into the patient’s feet, doctors mapped the body’s drainage pathways on a 
special camera screen, enabling them to identify and remove the cancerous tissue while protecting 
major blood vessels. Unlike traditional open surgery, which requires deep cuts and carries a higher risk 
of painful skin damage and wound infections, the robot-assisted keyhole approach resulted in zero skin 
complications and enabled the patient to return home in just four days.
