Fortis Ludhiana Raises Concern Over Rising Incidences of Sugar-Induced Liver Damage in young adults

- April-19 is observed as the World Liver Day-

Ludhiana, April, 2025: On the occasion of World Liver Day, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana has raised concern on the increasingly common yet undiagnosed health threat sugar-induced liver damage – among the youngsters. While alcohol continues to be a well-known contributor to liver ailments, hepatologists are now urging the youth to be cautious about the excessive consumption of sugary drinks as it could be equally harmful.

Sugary beverages including aerated sodas, packaged fruit juices, sweetened teas, and energy drinks, have been linked to the rising incidences of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)—a condition that occurs when excess fat builds up in the liver. If the condition remains untreated for a long time, it leads to liver cirrhosis.

Emphasizing the broader health implications, Dr. Rajoo Singh Chhina, HOD and Director – Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, added:  "We’re observing a surge in young adults with early-stage liver issues. These patients have no history of alcohol consumption, but their diets are high in sugar. Early diagnosis and dietary intervention are key to preventing long-term complications.

Dr. Nitin Behl, Director – Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, shared insights on the issue:
"There is a growing misconception that liver disease only affects those who consume alcohol. In reality, regular consumption of sugary beverages can lead to fat accumulation in the liver, inflammation, and even cirrhosis over time. It’s important to understand that sugar, particularly fructose, when consumed in excess, can be equally harmful."

The experts also highlighted that they have been seeing early-stage liver ailments in young adults, who are non-alcoholic.

Dr. Amit Bansal, Consultant – Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana said:  "Healthy liver function is vital for digestion, detoxification, and metabolic balance. To safeguard the liver, individuals must focus on reducing processed sugars, reading nutrition labels, and making smarter beverage choices. Switching to water, unsweetened beverages, and fresh homemade juices can make a significant difference."

As a part of its World Liver Day initiative, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana is advocating for increased public awareness on liver-friendly lifestyle practices, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and periodic liver health check-ups—especially for individuals with risk factors like obesity, diabetes, or a sedentary lifestyle. Fortis Hospital Ludhiana remains committed to early diagnosis, advanced care, and sustained awareness efforts to ensure better liver health for all.
