Fortis Shalimar Bagh Launches North India’s First Multidisciplinary Child Obesity Clinic
Aims to curb India’s rising childhood obesity crisis through scientific treatment, early diagnosis & lifestyle interventions
New Delhi, 30th November, 2025: With an aim to decrease the growing burden of childhood obesity in India, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh has launched North India’s first dedicated Multidisciplinary Child Obesity Clinic, bringing together specialists from Paediatrics, Nutrition, Endocrinology, Physical Training, Psychology and Lifestyle Management under one roof. The clinic was launched by Dr. Arvind Kumar, Principal Director & HOD, Paediatrics, and Mr. Naveen Sharma, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh.
As a part of the launch, the hospital organised a painting competition for school children, along with interactive sessions for parents, principals, and teachers. Over 300 students from nearby schools, along with their parents and educational leaders, participated in the event.
Childhood obesity has rapidly emerged as one of the most significant health concerns in India. According to The Lancet, the country could have over 440 million obese and overweight people by 2050, making it a looming public health challenge. It is estimated that one in five urban school children is overweight or obese, and such children are five times more likely to become obese adults, leading to lifelong health complications. Early-onset obesity has been linked to diabetes, hypertension, hormonal imbalance, cardiovascular disease and mental health concerns as early as 12–14 years of age.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently raised alarm over the scale of the issue, calling the projected number of 44 crore obese Indians by 2050 “huge and scary”, and urging citizens to adopt healthier eating habits, reduce excess oil and fat consumption, and incorporate physical activity into daily life. With urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles and increased screen time, childhood obesity has shifted from being a nutritional issue to a clinical, social and developmental challenge- highlighting the urgent need for structured intervention and scientific care.
- The clinic will follow evidence-based protocols designed specifically for paediatric patients. This includes: •
- BMI & body composition assessment
- Metabolic and hormonal testing
- Psychological & behavioural evaluation
- Personalised diet and lifestyle plans
- Supervised physical activity programmes
Long-term progress tracking & follow-up
The clinic aims not just to correct obesity, but to prevent future complications and improve long-term quality of life.
Dr. Arvind Kumar, Principal Director & HOD, Paediatrics, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh, said,“Childhood obesity is no longer a lifestyle choice, it is a clinical reality. We are seeing children as young as 10 or 12 with diabetes, hypertension, depression, and hormonal issues. Obesity affects not just their physical health, but also mental well-being, academic performance, and social confidence. With this clinic, our aim is to give families access to scientific guidance, multidisciplinary care and structured support, because early intervention can change the entire trajectory of a child’s life. Prevention, timely diagnosis and lifestyle modification are not just important, they are essential if we want a healthier future generation.”
Mr. Naveen Sharma, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh, said, “At Fortis Healthcare, our vision extends beyond treatment, we believe in prevention, awareness and long-term wellness. Childhood obesity is not just a medical issue; it is a societal concern that requires timely action. With the launch of this clinic, we are integrating clinical excellence with lifestyle counselling, nutritional guidance, and emotional support to create a full 360-degree care ecosystem for children. Our aim is to intervene early, support families, and build a healthier paediatric population for the future.”
