Malaria and Mosquito-Borne Diseases on the Rise Fortis Expert Calls for Preventive Action

Amritsar, 25th April 2025: Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar, is raising awareness about the rising threat of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya, which continue to emerge as major public health concerns, especially during seasonal transitions and monsoon months.

Diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya are transmitted through bites of infected mosquitoes. These infections often begin with high fever, fatigue, chills, and body aches—but if not diagnosed and treated early, they can lead to serious complications including severe anaemia, low platelet count, dehydration, and organ dysfunction. Vulnerable groups such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and  those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk.

Dr. Rajeev Mehra, Additional Director, Internal Medicine, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar, highlighted the urgency of public cooperation in tackling this growing crisis. He stated,“We are seeing a significant increase in mosquito-borne diseases each year, particularly during the warmer and wetter months. These illnesses are preventable, yet many cases turn severe due to delayed diagnosis or lack of preventive practices. Communities must stay informed and vigilant—simple habits like removing stagnant water, using repellents, and seeking early medical care can go a long way in reducing disease burden.”

In Amritsar and other urban centres, the combination of rising temperatures and erratic rainfall has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Public health data continues to report seasonal surges in infections—malaria and dengue being the most prominent—between April and September.

With mosquito populations thriving in stagnant water and poor drainage zones—common in many urban localities and construction areas—proactive prevention becomes critical. Citizens are advised to use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, use bed nets, and ensure there is no stagnant water in or around homes to stop breeding.

Fortis Escorts Hospital, Amritsar, remains committed to promoting preventive health education, early screening, and community outreach to curb the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Individuals experiencing symptoms like fever, chills, fatigue, nausea, rash, or body aches should consult a physician promptly to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
