MUMBAI’S 19th CADAVER ORGAN DONATION OF 2026 AT S.L. RAHEJA HOSPITAL, MAHIM ENABLES HEART, LIVER AND BONE DONATIONS 

~ Collaborative effort marks the city’s 6th heart transplant and 15th liver transplant of 2026; highlights seamless inter-hospital coordination and timely organ transplant ~ 

 Clinicians at S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mahim – A Fortis Associate successfully facilitated a multi-organ donation today, playing a pivotal role in driving organ donation and transplant activity in Mumbai. This contribution marked the city’s 19th cadaver organ donation of 2026 and enabled Mumbai’s 6th heart transplant and 15th liver transplant of the year, performed today at Fortis Hospital, Mulund and S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mahim, respectively. The noble act of donation by the donor family led to the retrieval of critical organs and tissues, including the heart, liver, and bones, offering a renewed chance at life for multiple recipients waitlisted for life-saving transplants. 

The donor, a 47-year-old woman from Bandra, Mumbai, was declared brain dead following an intracranial bleed. In a deeply selfless decision, her husband, two children, and brother consented to donate her organs. The Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre, Mumbai, coordinated the allocation of the organs; the heart was assigned to Fortis Hospital, Mulund, the liver to S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mahim, and the bones to a local tissue bank. 

The cadaveric liver was transplanted into a 62-yr-old male recipient at S.L. Raheja Hospital Mahim; he is originally from Varanasi (currently residing in Mulund). Listed for transplant in September 2025, the patient had been battling Hepatic Carcinoma with End-Stage Liver Failure. The transplant was performed by a team of specialists including Dr Vikram Raut (Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant and HPB Sciences), Dr Aditya Date (Consultant Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery), and Dr Manoj Bhambare (Consultant Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery). The recipient, a farmer by profession, is supported by his wife and daughter. 

The retrieved heart was transported to Fortis Hospital Mulund in 23mins (2.30pm - 2.53pm) via a Green Corridor, enabled by the Police and Traffic services, helping minimize ischemic time in heart transplants. The heart was transplanted into a 39-yr-old male recipient from Buldhana, who had been registered in March 2026, due to severely reduced heart pumping function. The transplant was performed by Dr Dhananjay Malankar (Senior Consultant, CVTS Surgery); the life-saving transplant gives the recipient a new lease of life and a chance to return to normalcy. 

The retrieved bones were sent for tissue banking and will be used for reconstructive procedures, further extending the impact of this selfless act. 

This successful multi-organ donation was made possible through seamless coordination between clinical teams, transplant coordinators, and the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), ensuring timely retrieval and allocation.
