Noida’s 1st Robotic Kidney Transplant Successfully Performed On 68- Yr-Old Man from Myanmar at Fortis Hospital, Noida

~Minimally Invasive Robot-aided surgeries have revolutionized Kidney Transplants for Elderly Patients with complex health conditions~

Noida, 16th January 2025: In a first in Noida, Fortis Hospital Noida successfully conducted a Robot-aided Kidney Transplant on a 68-year-old man from Myanmar, who was suffering from chronic kidney disease and undergoing dialysis since June last year. The patient was treated by the team of doctors led by Dr. Piyush Varshney, Director – Urology & Kidney Transplant, and Dr. Anuja Porwal, Director – Nephrology Fortis Hospital, Noida and he was discharged in a stable condition in 8 days. The patient had abdominal obesity, which posed risks for poor healing and surgical infections. During dialysis, the man experienced complications such as frequent fainting episodes, severe muscle spasms, and low blood pressure. Unable to perform his daily activities, the patient’s family explored the option of a kidney transplant and brought him to Fortis Hospital, Noida. Upon his admission at Fortis Noida, the patient was weak, with poor nutritional status due to accumulated toxins and ineffective dialysis. A comprehensive medical evaluation, including blood tests, ultrasound, cardiac assessments, vein and artery evaluations confirmed the need for a kidney transplant. However, his abdominal obesity and compromised immunity increased the risk of complications, making robotic kidney transplantation the preferred option. The patient’s sister came forward as the donor. The surgery took place for 4-5 hours with smooth post-operative recovery and no complications. Giving details of the case, Dr. Anuja Porwal, Director – Nephrology, Fortis Hospital, Noida said, “Robot aided kidney transplants significantly enhance patient outcomes, especially in cases involving age-related complications and obesity. The precision of robotic surgery helps reduce the risk of complications and ensures a faster recovery. The smaller incision means less pain for the patient, and the advanced technology used during the procedure makes the transplant more accurate and safer, helping patients get back to their daily lives more quickly.” Dr. Piyush Varshney, Director – Urology & Kidney Transplant, Fortis Hospital, Noida added, “Robot-aided surgery offers numerous advantages, especially for elderly patients with complex health conditions. In patients with abdominal obesity, robot-aided surgery allows easier access to the surgical site, reduces complications like infection and hernia and ensures faster recovery. The robotic transplant involved a 5 cms incision in the peri-umbilical region, significantly smaller than traditional surgeries, which require muscle-cutting incisions. The procedure also enabled precise identification of arteries and veins using 10x magnification, reducing ischemia (a condition that occurs when there's a lack of blood flow to a part of the body, which can lead to tissue damage) time and bleeding risks.” Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital Noida, said, “This is Noida’s first case of Robotic Kidney Transplant, which was performed at Fortis. This landmark procedure reflects our commitment to advanced medical technology and excellence in patient care. We aim to provide the highest quality of care and achieve the best outcomes for our patients.”
