One Organ Donor Gives New Lease of Life to Multiple Patients Through Multi-Organ Donation at Fortis Hospital Mulund
~ 10th organ donation at Fortis Mulund in 2026 and 47th organ donation in Mumbai this year~
In an inspiring act of compassion, the family of a patient at Fortis Hospital Mulund consented to organ donation following his death due to malignant cerebral edema, offering renewed hope to multiple patients awaiting transplants. The donor, Mr Soumil Vishal Nadkarni, was declared brain-dead in accordance with established medical protocols. His family consented to the donation of his liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, small bowel and corneas. Following the family's consent, the hospital's transplant team initiated the organ donation process and coordinated with the relevant authorities for allocation of the organs.
The donated liver was split and allocated to two recipients. One part was allocated to a 67-year-old woman at Fortis Hospital Mulund, under the care of Dr Aditya Nanavati, while the second part was allocated to a six-year-old boy at Jupiter Hospital, Thane. The donated heart was allocated to Fortis Hospital Mulund, where it was transplanted into 15-year-old Mr Atharv Chavan from Karad, Maharashtra, under the surgical care of Dr Dhananjay Malankar. Atharv had been registered for a heart transplant on August 1, 2026.
One kidney was allocated to Fortis Hospital Mulund, where it was transplanted into 64-year-old Mr Narendra Dubey from Mulund East, under the care of Dr Suresh Bhagat. The second kidney was allocated to Bombay Hospital. The corneas were entrusted to Shree KBO Drashti Foundation for the Blind to help restore sight.
The donor's family had also consented to the donation of his lungs, pancreas and small bowel. However, no suitable recipient was identified in India for these organs.
The donation process required close coordination among the hospital's doctors, nurses, transplant coordinators and support teams, along with the relevant organ donation and transplantation authorities and recipient hospitals. Fortis Hospital Mulund supported the donor's family throughout the process and completed all required medical and administrative procedures in accordance with prescribed protocols.
The donor's mother, who is a doctor at KEM Hospital, Mumbai, was aware of the importance of organ donation. Following counselling by the ICU team regarding the patient's condition and the possibility of organ donation, she took the initiative to support and facilitate the donation process. The donor's father, a non-medical professional working in the IT sector, initially found it difficult to come to terms with the concept of brain death. However, with counselling and support from the medical team and his family, he understood the significance of organ donation and consented to the donation.
The family's decision has transformed a moment of profound grief into an opportunity for multiple patients to receive life-saving transplants. Their selfless act has given the donor a meaningful legacy, with his organs offering renewed hope to recipients and their families.
Dr S. Narayani, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Maharashtra, said, “Organ donation is one of the most selfless decisions a family can make at a time of immense personal loss. The decision taken by Mr Soumil Vishal Nadkarni’s family has given multiple patients an opportunity for a new lease of life and created a lasting legacy of generosity. We are deeply grateful to the family for their courage and compassion, and to our doctors, nurses, transplant coordinators and support teams whose coordinated efforts helped ensure that the donated organs reached suitable recipients in time. Every such donation reminds us of the profound difference one decision can make to several lives and reinforces the need to continue building greater awareness around organ donation.”
This multi-organ donation marks the 10th organ donation at Fortis Hospital Mulund in 2026 and the 47th organ donation in Mumbai this year, underscoring the importance of organ donation and timely coordination among donor families, hospitals, transplant teams and relevant authorities. While awareness around organ donation continues to grow, a significant number of patients across the country continue to await suitable organs for transplantation. Every family that chooses to donate during a moment of profound loss can help offer another patient a second chance at life.
