Pulmonologists at Fortis Ludhiana Raise Awareness Over Increasing E-Cigarette Usage Among Youngsters

Ludhiana, May 2025: As the world marks World No Tobacco Day on May 31st, doctors at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana are raising concern over the increasing use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices, especially among teenagers and young adults. Experts warn that these products, often advertised as “safer” alternatives to cigarettes, are in fact harmful and highly addictive.

The government banned e-cigarettes in 2019 under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act. However, these products are still easily available online and in informal markets, making it difficult to keep them out of the hands of youth.

Dr. Sushil Gupta, Additional Director – Pulmonology & Critical Care at Fortis Ludhiana, shared his concern: "We are seeing more and more young patients coming in with breathing issues, coughing, and early signs of lung damage – many of them are regular users of e-cigarettes. These devices contain harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and acrolein, and most of them have high levels of nicotine, which can lead to strong addiction. The sleek design and fruity flavors are misleading – these are not safe."

Dr. Randeep Singh, Associate Consultant – Pulmonology & Critical Care at Fortis Ludhiana, added: "There is a common myth that vaping helps people quit smoking, but in many cases, people end up using both cigarettes and e-cigarettes. This doubles the harm to their lungs and heart. The best solution is to quit all forms of tobacco and nicotine. Medical support, proper awareness, and counseling can really help individuals overcome this addiction."

The team at Fortis Ludhiana is urging parents, teachers, and community members to be aware of this growing issue and start open conversations with teenagers about the dangers of vaping. The hospital is also emphasizing the need for health education programs and support systems that can guide young people away from such habits.

On World No Tobacco Day, Fortis Ludhiana reaffirms its commitment to protecting community health and promoting a tobacco-free future for the next generation.
