Rare surgery at Fortis Hospital Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, Helps Retain Severely Damaged Kidney of 32-Year-Old Road Accident Victim from Kalaburagi
Kalaburagi, 10 July 2025: Fortis Hospital, Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, successfully conducted a rare and complex surgery to preserve a severely injured kidney of a 32-year-old male road accident victim. The surgery, led by Dr. Prem Kumar K, Senior Consultant, Urology, Fortis Hospital, Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, allowed the young man to return to normal life with both the kidneys functioning – a rare achievement in such severe cases.
The patient, Ranga (name changed), who hails from Kalaburagi, was critically injured in a road accident in March and was initially treated at a hospital in his hometown. He had a Grade IV-V kidney injury, a condition where half of his kidney was shattered, and he suff ered from heavy internal bleeding. His doctors had recommended removing the damaged kidney, which is the standard procedure in such extreme cases. However, the patient and his family were concerned about the loss of a kidney at such a young age, and had refused to consent for kidney removal, opting for conservative treatment. However, his condition did not improve, and he remained bedridden for a month with dangerously low hemoglobin level and continuous bleeding, requiring multiple transfusions. He was then referred to Fortis Hospital Rajajinagar for advanced care.
At Fortis Hospital Rajajinagar, the doctors assessed the patient and considering the family's wishes, they decided to attempt to preserve the kidney. This was challenging as the kidney was heavily damaged and there were large clots around the organ.
Dr. Prem Kumar K, Senior Consultant Urology, Fortis Hospital Rajajinagar, Bengaluru explained, “We removed about 2.5 litres of clotted blood and dead tissues from around the kidney. More than half of the kidney was still functional. We successfully stopped the bleeding while keeping the functional part intact and placed stents. Timely surgery, teamwork and close monitoring helped us save both the patient and his kidney. This was a challenging and rare case of a young man with a life-threatening severe kidney injury. In most such cases, the kidney is usually removed to save the patient’s life. It’s a great example of what’s possible with expertise and determination. The patient recovered quickly and notably, the total cost of treatment at Fortis Hospital Rajajinagar was less than one third of the cost incurred at another hospital, with a far better outcome.”
The patient was discharged within five days in stable condition and has since returned to work in Mumbai. He now has one fully healthy kidney and about three-quarters of normal function in the injured kidney.
