Scarless Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery Gives New Lease of Life to 16-Year-Old Teenager at Fortis
Manesar
Manesar, August 22nd, 2025: Doctors at Fortis Hospital, Manesar successfully performed a rare and
complex Total endoscopic cardiac surgery to repair a large 35 mm hole in the heart of a 16-year-old boy
from Faridkot, Punjab. The teenager, had been suffering from congenital heart defect since birth, owing
to which his heart function had become weak over the years. Despite multiple consultations, the family
had avoided treatment due to concerns over the large scar associated with conventional open-heart
surgery.
This is when the patient’s family approached Fortis Manesar where a team of doctors led by Dr. Mahesh
Wadhwani, Director & HOD CTVS opted for a Scarless Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery. The surgical team
was led by Dr. Shyamveer Singh Khangarot (Senior Consultant Paediatric CTVS), and supported by Dr.
Deepak Thakur (Senior Consultant Paediatric Cardiology), Dr. Alok Ranjan Sahoo (Additional Director
& HOD Cardiac Anaesthesia), Dr. Garima Biyani (Consultant Paediatric Cardiology) and Dr. Radhika
Khare (Attending Consultant Cardiac Anaesthesia). The five-hour-long surgery was completed
successfully, and the patient was discharged in a stable condition within five days, showing improved
breathing, strength, and stamina.
The patient was presented to Fortis Manesar with complaints of breathlessness on exertion for the past
six months. On admission, his vital signs were stable, but detailed investigations revealed a large 35 mm
hole in the heart - atrial septal defect (ASD), a moderately leaking heart valve, pulmonary hypertension,
and a mildly leaking valve on the left side of the heart.
Pre-operative tests, including an ECHO and chest X-ray, confirmed enlarged right heart chambers and
cardiomegaly (enlarged heart). While conventional open-heart surgery was an option, the family was
concerned about the risks and the large chest scar. Given the complexity, the doctors opted for
minimally invasive total endoscopic cardiac surgery. Through four tiny incisions (each less than 5 cm)
under the right armpit, the team successfully repaired the hole in the heart without opening the chest.
This advanced technique is performed only at only a few select centers in India. It ensures faster
recovery, minimal pain, and helps patients avoid the psychological trauma of a visible scar. A postoperative ECHO confirmed complete closure of the defect.
Giving details of the case, Dr. Mahesh Wadhwani, Director & HOD CTVS & Dr. Shyamveer singh
Khangarot , Senior Consultant Pediatric and Neonatal Cardiac surgery, Fortis Hospital Manesar said,
“Endoscopic cardiac surgery is among the most advanced and complex procedures, performed at very
few centers in India. This approach uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) inserted through
small incisions to visualize and operate on the heart. It is most often used for atrial septal defect closures
and treatment of other CHD related conditions. The technique enables faster recovery, minimal pain, and
avoids the psychological trauma of large chest scars. This case highlights how innovation and precision in
cardiac care can transform young lives. We would also like to thank Genesis foundation Gurugram based
NGO for supporting this case financially through their CSR donor Assets care & Reconstruction
Enterprises Ltd. As the patient’s parents could not afford the surgery.”
Thanking the Doctors, Patients Mother said “From the very beginning, we knew my son had a hole in his
heart. We visited multiple hospitals across North India, but each time, we were offered conventional
open-heart surgery, which meant large scars and a longer, more difficult recovery for our boy. Then we
came to Fortis Hospital Manesar, Gurgaon, to meet Dr. Deepak Thakur senior consultant Pediatric
cardiology and structural heart disease. After thorough evaluation, we felt reassured. And much to our
relief, the team offered a minimally invasive surgical approach - closing the defect without opening his
chest. It was a profoundly hopeful moment for us as parents. We are happy to see our child leading a
happy and heathy life now”
Abhijit Singh, Facility Director, Fortis Manesar said “Fortis Hospital Manesar, is equipped with the latest
advanced healthcare technology, including state of the art Cath Labs, high resolution imaging
modalities, and comprehensive diagnostic capabilities. This case is a powerful testament to how the right
medical treatment, delivered through cutting-edge technology, can ease the path to recovery and
enhance patient outcomes.”
