Walkathon for Wellness: Adayu & IMA Gurugram Promote TobaccoFree Living on World No Tobacco Day
Gurugram, May 31, 2026: This World No Tobacco Day, Adayu – Fortis Healthcare’s fully integrated sychiatry and de-addiction hospital, in association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Gurugram organised a walkathon to spread awareness about the harmful impact of tobacco addiction on mental and physical health. The walkathon witnessed participation from more than 80 people - including doctors, mental health professionals and healthcare workers.
The 40-minute walkathon, began and ended at Adayu, aimed to promote healthier lifestyle habits while
highlighting the importance of living tobacco-free for better physical and emotional well-being. Tobacco
addiction is a massive public health crisis in India, claiming roughly 1.35 million lives annually. According
to World Health Organization, tobacco causes profound physical diseases primarily – cancers, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory failure, while fuelling a vicious cycle of psychiatric disorders, severe sleep disturbances, and decline in cognitive health.
Dr. Mantosh Kumar, Chief of Clinical Services, Adayu said, “Tobacco addiction is not only a physical health concern but also a mental health issue. Many individuals use tobacco as a coping mechanism for stress, anxiety and emotional challenges often, without realising the long-term psychological and physical impact. Through this walkathon, we want to spread awareness that quitting tobacco is a significant step
towards achieving overall emotional well-being and a healthier quality of life. Adayu has a special team of
doctors who specialize in treating substance abuse and de-addiction.
Dr. Rajesh Kataria, President, Indian Medical Association, Gurugram and Dr. Vinita Yadav, Secretary, Indian Medical Association, Gurugrams said, “It should be acknowledged that World No Tobacco Day
acts as a significant catalyst, reminding us that smoking is not just a matter of forming a mere habit, but
rather a crucial aspect of our lives that needs to be addressed from various angles as it has severe repercussions. As well-known as its impact on health may be, there is a necessity to consider various emotional, mental and even social factors related to nicotine consumption and addictions in general. This initiative reflects Adayu and IMA Gurugram’s commitment towards promoting holistic mental wellness by
addressing addiction-related behavioural health concerns and encouraging preventive healthcare practices.
