Wheelchair-Bound for Years, Elderly Couple Walks Again After Treatment at Fortis Greater Noida
Complex knee replacement surgeries restore mobility and independence to Uttarakhand couple suffering
from long-standing knee disability
Greater Noida, 22 January, 2026: Fortis Hospital Greater Noida has successfully restored mobility and
independence to an elderly couple from Uttarakhand, who had been living with severe knee pain and
walking disability for several years. After consulting multiple hospitals in Delhi-NCR, without finding much
lasting relief, the couple approached Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, where they received comprehensive
evaluation and advanced orthopaedic care under Dr Bharat Goswami, Consultant, Orthopaedic, Fortis
Greater Noida resulting in a life-changing outcome.
The 72-year-old husband had been wheelchair-bound for nearly four years due to severe knee pain caused by tuberculosis of the knee and an infected joint. Given the complexity of his condition, he first underwent debridement surgery with an antibiotic knee spacer. After a gap of 15 days, a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) was successfully performed, restoring stability and function to the joint and enabling him to walk independently once again.
His 68-year-old wife also had been suffering from debilitating knee pain and restricted mobility for nearly
seven years due to osteoarthritis. She underwent a Bilateral Total Knee Replacement, following which she regained the ability to stand, walk independently, and carry out daily activities with significantly reduced
pain. Both the surgeries were successfully performed, and the couple was discharged in a stable condition. Giving details of the cases, Dr Bharat Goswami, Consultant, Orthopaedic, Fortis Hospital, Greater Noida said, “Both the cases were medically challenging due to long-standing joint damage and, in one case, an active infection. With accurate diagnosis, a staged treatment approach, and advanced surgical techniques, both patients have achieved improved mobility and a significantly better quality of life. If left untreated, the patients could have faced progressive disability in walking, persistent knee pain, and further decline in mobility, severely affecting overall quality of life.”
Expressing his gratitude, the 72-year-old patient said, “Being confined to a wheelchair for almost four
years had taken away my independence and confidence. After consulting several doctors without much
relief, coming to Fortis Hospital Greater Noida was a turning point in my life. Today, being able to stand
and walk again after several years feels nothing short of a miracle.”
His 68-year-old wife said, “For nearly seven years, even the simplest daily activities had become painful
and exhausting for me. Watching my husband struggle alongside me made it even harder. The treatment
at Fortis Hospital Greater Noida has transformed our lives. After my surgery, I can walk independently and live without constant pain.”
Siddharth Nigam, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida said, “Fortis Hospital Greater Noida is

support, round-the-clock emergency and trauma care, and a strong multidisciplinary, patient-first
