In a Heroic Act of Organ Donation, 28-Year-Old Man from Bengaluru Gives Gift of Life to Eight People

-A green corridor to transport the lungs and heart valves was created from Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi to Manipal Hospital Hal- Old Airport Road, covering 20 kms in mere 29 minutes amidst heavy traffic-

Bengaluru, 02 April 2025: In a remarkable demonstration of courage and compassion by the donors’ family, coupled with clinical excellence by team of doctors at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, multiple organs were successfully retrieved and donated from a 28-year-old road accident victim, who had tragically passed away due to a critical head injury.

The young man was rushed to Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, following a road accident with severe head injury and oral bleeding in a critically unstable state. Upon arrival a CT scan of the head revealed a rapidly enlarging blood clot in the brain. Despite immediate medical and intensive intervention, his condition continued to deteriorate. The patient was placed on a ventilator, where the doctors provided intensive care. Despite all medical efforts, the victim condition did not improve and was declared Brain Dead by the team of designated Brain death certifying committee doctors.

The multi-disciplinary team of doctors then counselled the patient’s family for option of organ donation. Amidst profound sorrow and grief, the family displayed courage by consenting to donate the organs of the loved one which included his eyes, lungs, liver, heart valves and kidneys and Skin. The entire process of multi-organ retrieval took around 5 hours.

The organs from the donor saved the lives of eight individuals across various city-based hospitals in Bangalore, with both eyes donated to Narayana Netralaya, both lungs to Manipal Hospital, the liver to HCG Hospital, heart valves to Manipal Hospital, and one kidney to Ramaiah Hospital. The second kidney was transplanted into a 41-year-old woman at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, who had been suffering from kidney failure for the past seven years. The lungs and heart valves were immediately transported via a green corridor, created between Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi and Manipal Hospital HAL-Old Airport Road, covering approximately 20 kms in mere 29 minutes.

Dr Pradeep Kumar S, Medical Director, Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi said, "Despite urgent medical intervention, the donor sustained a severe brain hemorrhage due to the extent of the head injury and multiple clots in the brain following the accident. Unfortunately, despite intensive critical care and ventilator support, he could not be revived. We honor the donor and deeply appreciate the family's selfless decision to embrace organ donation, offering the gift of life to those in need. This life-saving donation wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our medical team and the seamless coordination with the traffic police and SOTTO. We hope this inspiring act encourages more individuals to register as organ donors and thus save more lives.”
